What is with all the new shows featuring aliens etc?

So far I have watched Threshold, Invasion, and Surface. They all seem pretty good, but Threshold is my favorite so far. What do you guys think?

(putting on my tin foil hat…don’t want the aliens to know I’m posting about them)

It’s a conspiracy. The writers of these shows are all aliens. With their story lines they’re preparing humans to be more open to the idea of creatures from other planets so that when they do decide to invade us the inhabitants of earth will not attack them but instead welcome them with open arms so that the aliens can more readily rule the earth.

BTW, I have not seen any of these shows. I must catch up with my TV viewing.

Basically, I think that many people are intrigued with the enigma of UFOs and the reported kidnappings by spooky looking creatures with enormously big, reptillian black eyes - worthy of a Halloween costume.

People are puzzled by the many unaswered questions regarding UFOs and whatever else accompanies them. The continuous interest in the subject is what will turn on the creative juices of writers’ minds. Besides this, the media is always on the lookout on how to make more money, and these type of shows probably will do the trick.

TV reflects social concerns, I guess shows about aliens will be vehicles to play out our reactions to “aliens” in our midst, new legal and illegal immigrants. I remember when they used to be referred to as “aliens” in TV commercials advising them to renew their green cards.

I hadn’t realized that there were so many alien shows on TV. I must be too busy watching Stargate SG-1. 😃

My theory boils down to “creative bancruptcy.” Shows need tension and conflict for storyline development. Political correctness (and/or customer preference) prevents (or diminishes) the use of traditional sources of such conflict. Aliens are one group that don’t have an advocacy or anti-defamation group. The same is true of witches, demons, and spirits which provide conflict in a whole host of other shows (Medium, W.I.T.C.H.E.S., Nightstalker, GhostWhisperer, Charmed, Supernatural, etc.)

and for this they cancelled “Joan of Arcadia”?

As intriguing as Ghost Whisperer seems from the commercials, and considering it replaced Joan of Arcadia, I just couldn’t bring myself to watch it. Although I did walk in on the tail end of “Supernatural” and that was rather intriguing (in a sci-fi mystery kinda way).

I guess it was safer for the network to go with the concept of ghosts moving around earth until old business gets resolved thanks to someone with ‘the gift’ than it was to have God actually working through people on earth in order to teach viewers how to work for the greater good, for all, in little ways so that we can produce ‘good ripples’ in our lifetimes.

For some reason I guess Hollywood finds alien premises more ‘plausible’ than the reality of God actually reaching out to us through each other.

Come to think of it, I wouldn’t be surprised to find much of the funding for the alien programs to be coming from Christian Scientist sources…it’s right up their alley and they do control a lot of the power in the tv/movie industry.

I saw supernatural, it was good. Ghost whisperer is to “been there done that”, like 6th sense, but no where near as cool. I miss the X-files.

Oh yeah…particularly the shows with “The Lone Gunmen”…those guys were too much!
