So I’m writing a fictional story with a lead character who is defensive center midfielder? Would he get a yellow card if he tripped an opposing teammate while he was dribbling like a failed attempt to tackle? I know VERY LITTLE about soccer. I’m struggling to write a good scene. I know I need to research. Soccer is not what the story is about though. I wanted one soccer scene. I need help. Thank you. Tell me everything you know that makes a soccer game interesting and about the role of defensive center midfielder.

It’s a foul if the midfielder is intentionally going for the player and not the ball. Wether or not it deserves a yellow card depends on a) how bad the foul was, and b) how likely he was to score. In youth leagues yellows cards are rarely shown.

When I reffed soccer, I took a few things into account:
  1. How serious and intentional was the foul? If it was obviously intentional or very serious, I’d consider a yellow. If it was obviously intentional and very serious, that would be a red.
  2. How much of a problem has this player been? If a player was frequently being the source of fouls, I might have thrown a yellow as a sign to tone down their aggression.
  3. How old were they? The games I reffed were generally at the U-10 to U-14 level. U-10 kids would never get a yellow, but I might talk to the coach and have them removed temporarily. U-14 kids were treated as adults.
Normally I wouldn’t consider if it stopped a clear scoring opportunity unless it was very obvious that the team was likely to score, as in player is on a breakaway and gets deliberately tripped from behind. Another consideration was how play continued afterwards. If stopping the game would advantage the team that committed the foul, I would let play go on. (Parents never understood that one.)

Thank You. I’m learning more about soccer. I’m trying to write a convincing soccer scene.

You know, it would help you a lot to watch some good soccer. The finals of the world cup are tomorrow (Sunday) at 7 am.

There are websites, such as this one (link), that specialize in soccer. And it’s a British site. You’d be more likely to find what you’re looking for there than here at CAF.
