Traditionally it was believed that Moses wrote the Pentateuch which was long after the flood. Before then, it is my understanding that such information was passed down by oral tradition.

If we believe that scripture was inspired by God then God would not be constrained by historical events or physical evidence. He could easily inspire man “post flood” to write of events prior to the flood.

What makes you think that there were written accounts? All ancient cultures preserved their histories orally. . . . (and not-incidentally, most of them include a deluge account).

There are a lot of interesting issues about the flood account in the Bible.

Certainly the reality of whether such a thing happened is relevant, but the Bible puts it into so much more perspective – what was happening before it, why God sent the flood, the flood itself, and then what happened after the flood, and who was “saved” in the flood, for example.

Regarding records, the rabbis in Judaism suggest that there was a covenant that existed, but which is now explicitly lost, that explains the reason for the flood. As a result of breaking that earlier covenant, which they refer to as the Noahide covenant, God sent the flood. (the rabbis don’t have a problem with speculating on what more there is; they plainly accept the revelation that they have, but don’t feel limited to it – they believe that there is a lot that the Bible leaves for them to figure out, like how to figure out what to do when some of the 613 divine commands in the Bible interfere with each other.)

The Jews today believe that all mankind can be “saved” and enjoy the beatific vision if they adhere to this earlier covenant. Only the Jews are required to adhere to the Sinai covenant, as they explain it. They still see themselves as chosen by God, set apart, and, if you will, held to a higher [or perhaps a more specific] standard.

That should give anybody some leads to hunt down the details of this and see what might be there in the flood account, which has not otherwise been saved in the Bible as we have received it.

If they were important, God would have had Noah take them into the Ark don’t you think?
