When I was in Catholic school in the 60s, the good sisters taught us that on All Soul’s Day, for every Hail Mary, Our Father and Glory Be we said today, a soul was released from Purgatory.

Logically, there must be some souls who are so close to attonement that this is all they need. 🙂

This wasn’t just one well meaning nun. I heard it in three different schools, different states, different orders of nuns. Was this just some “pop” devotion or did it have some official basis?

was just discussing this today with an elderly nun from Ireland, and we both recollect you had to go out of church and come back in after each set of prayers, before you prayed for the next person. does anybody else recollect this? also we seem to remember a custom, we think on All Souls, and we think among Italians, of visiting 7 churches and praying for the holy souls in each church. don’t know if our memories are failing or if this really was the tradition. we both remember, in our parochial schools, being led over to church by class to pray for the holy souls in purgatory, each class had one hour or set time to pray.
