This is the music used at our All Souls Evening Mass of Remembrance for deceased parishioners. The ensemble included 5 vocalists accompanied by piano, flute, and electric bass. I’ve noted a few songs with unusual accompaniment.

Prelude - Blessing of Aaron - acap

Gathering - Alive in Christ Jesus - David Haas

Psalm - Let Us Go Rejoicing - Joncas
(Bass doubled the Tango riff that runs throughout the piano accompaniment in the refrain)

Gospel Acclamation - Celtic Alleluia - O’Carroll & Walker
(Choir starts refrain acap, all instruments join at 7th measure)

The Prayer of the Faithful included a reading of the names of all 61 parishioners who died during the last 12 months, accompanied by handbell clusters every 10 or so names.

Presentation - Peace I Leave With You - Giacomo Perti (1661-1756)
(Choir accompanied by solo bass, playing even quarter notes, generally on the root, throughout.)

Sanctus, Memorial Acclamation, Amen from Land of Rest
Agnus Dei - Mass of Remembrance

Communion - Shepherd Me O God - Marty Haugen

Meditation - Dona Nobis Pacem - (Choir accompanied by solo flute.)

Recessional - Soon and Very Soon - Andre Crouch - Verse 3 (of 4) accompanied by solo bass.

The weather was raw … windy and partly cloudy with temps in the mid 40’s
… and that’s what it was like in the south of Chicago last night.

this is my absolute favorite funeral hymn, and I now have tears in my eyes, because our beloved pastor loved to use this in Masses with children, and it was sung at his funeral. Fr. Brown, we love you, pray for us.

Hi,

It’s funny how some songs can bring back such strong feelings.

Soon and Very Soon is one of my favorites, too. We use it at regular Sunday Mass 2 or 3 times a year … generally once or twice in the month before Advent.

Our ensemble has served for two funeral Masses in the last couple of years, and Soon and Very Soon was used at both of them. Our Resurrection Choir gets requests for it, but I don’t know how often.
