Although she never has acted on it thus far, my wife keeps saying she wants divorce. What is church teaching on allowing a spouse to divorce you?

I’m sorry to hear that. It must be difficult to have your spouse say this to you.

The Church doesn’t have a teaching on that. The Church would call the spouse who does not seek divorce the “innocent spouse”.

Legally speaking, if you are in the US, or most other Western countries, you can’t stop your spouse if they want a divorce.

No fault divorce means your spouse can divorce you whether you agree or not.

Of course I can’t stop her, but should I fight to change her mind or just accept it?

I’m sorry you’re going through this. Have you tried receiving marital counselling with your spouse?

This really needs to be your decision as to what to do. I know that’s unhelpful, but you are the only one to know the intricate details required to make this decision. You should ask advice from your Priest, if you haven’t already.

In general, it’s something we should all do, fight for our marriage. But, that is not always realistic and in some cases ill advised (mental illness, abuse, etc.). We don’t know your situation. it might serve you better to get guidance from your pastor.

I agree with Lou2U. If you haven’t already, I would encourage you to try marriage counseling. If your spouse won’t go with you, would you consider going alone to individual counseling? I think either way, whether you divorce or stay married, counseling could benefit you.

To the OP: this is good advise.

However, you can also try one or more of the following:

Praying for you and your family…

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name.
Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses,
As we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee.
Blessed art thou among women
And blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God,
Pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be world without end. Amen.
