If you are referring to the ALPHA program, it is not a bible study per se, it is a course, usually 12 weeks including a reatreat day, which begins with a community meal, and then consists in a teaching session, based on a video presentation, on the elements of the Apostles Creed. It was “invented” by a charismatic Anglican priest of the more conservative persuasion named Nicky Gumbel in England. Its purpose is to introduce non-believers, the curious, the unchurched, or the indifferent Christian to the basic elements of Christian belief shared by all denominations.
it has enjoyed phenomenal success, also has a prison ministry version, a campus version, a CAtholic version, a Spanish version, a youth version etc. There is very little in the content that disagrees with Catholic teaching because it is so basic. anything problematic can be clarified by the facilitator in the discussion period that follows the video.
The facilitator introducing this program in a CAtholic parish will attend ALPHA workshops, and should attend the “Alpha for Catholics” session. ALPHA should ideally be followed up with a good introduction to Catholic teaching, we use Touching Jesus Through the Catholic Church, by Marcello d’Ambrosio
