I’m still not quite sure whether or not this is an absolute requirement, for the GIRM merely says it’s “desirable.”

If it is a requirement and a grave offense not to have one, I’d like some advice on getting this problem fixed at my parish.

Thanks for your help:)

Fact is that a crucifix is only absolutely require during mass. And that crucifix can be just about anywhere (in practice) with the current lax rules. Good luck.

The GIRM only coves the Mass itself. If there is no Mass, then there is no requirement to have an altar crucifix.

Perhaps my Eastern Catholic mind is no longer programmed to contemplate such possibilities, but I cannot imagine an altar or Catholic Church without a crucifix in plain view at all times.

Here is the paragraph in question:
  1. Likewise, either on the altar or near it, there is to be a cross, with the figure of Christ crucified upon it, a cross clearly visible to the assembled people. It is desirable that such a cross should remain near the altar even outside of liturgical celebrations, so as to call to mind for the faithful the saving Passion of the Lord.
