Those things have absolutely NO place at the Mass! Sheeesh! I have no idea why “a nice pick of reverent hymns” would require their use. Follow the hymnal or make your own but there overheads and Powerpoint presentations don’t belong at the Mass.
What in the name of all that is good is wrong with you? Its not obstructing anything, and its conductive to prayer. At one point there would have been someone like you saying lets not have hymnals, they distract the people. Also an overhead saves paper, which saves trees part of our stewardship of God’s earth. Not to mention that the money you speak of can now be directed towards outreach to the poor. Your attitude on this thread has been concerning, do you really think you should be up on the altar, being someone that judges something he knows nothing of? One that issues sweeping statements as if he were a clergyman himself and is too proud to admit he has done so? Change your name bro, or the attitude. You need to speak to your spiritual director on this.

PS, this is an add on from the original, but you do realise each day new hymns get written correct? What you suggest would effectively limit the congregations worship to a set list for years…Ah! There’s just so many things wrong with your statement it boggles this right-wing Catholic’s mind! Don’t even think of arguing that I’m a progressive or liberal. I’ve taken issue with my Priest on the stuff he does in contradiction with the GIRM, I’ve also advocated frequently the use of latin. But man, there’s gotta be a place where you can draw the line between traditionalism and that little thing we call narcisism.

They’re just lyrics to save time and paper. Man are you like this all the time? Oh and after John Paul the Great died we had a presentation, but thats rare.

Yeah, I have to admit I take the Mass ultra seriously.

It’s no place for such stuff.

The Guide I use is: “Called to Serve” by Father Albert J. Nevins, N.M.,Our Sunday Visitor is the publisher.

…Everyone here takes the mass ultra seriously, but I just kinda want a written explanation of how lyrics to reverent hymns in anyway detract from the solemnity of the Sacred Mass…and you keep jumping all my other points 'cause you know you’re wrong. Whats more is you don’t have the chutzpah to admit it. 😦

Just where are the lyrics being projected? Exactly where is the screen? Up in the sanctuary vying for attention with the crucifix or altar, or maybe even the tabernacle? Does the screen drop down at Communion right when people should be completely focused on Jesus? This may sound trite, but the use of overheads and such is so Protestant in appearance.

Why aren’t hymnals being used? If they answer is that the hymns (or songs) aren’t in a hymnal that I would suggest that is indicative of another problem. If you are forced to sing so many different songs that no single hymnal will work or that you must have overhead aids then that’s another serious problem.

Just buy the Adoremus Hymnal and be done with it – no yearly updates needed either…

Outside the sanctuary on a wall, to the side, so people have angle their heads slightly. Its pulled down before mass (either by me or an acolyte) and then taken away when everyone’s gone.

The monks of the early Church would memorise the psalms, those were their hymns, thats why we have the divine office today. At one point someone must have said, gee lets use hymnals, then another guy (just like you) would have said “No, thats distracting, gruff!” An overhead just saves time, money and paper. Get a grip.

What is an overhead aid? Yeesh.

There are no needs for overheads. All is does is take the focus off of the Mass. What’s next? A bouncing ball to keep time?

Almost all Jews used to memorize the psalms too – not that that strengthens your case either.
