In a liturgical procession, the farther back you are, the higher your rank is, so to speak.

The altar boys also cleared the way for the rest of the procession. The cross is like a flag, letting people know what to expect. Most parades start out with lesser ‘acts’ and the main person or thing at the end – think of the Macy’s parade with Santa at the end! Lol

The order for a liturgical procession usually is:

Master(s) of Ceremonies
*Leads the procession; directs other servers and ministers

Thurifer and Boat Bearer
*handles thurible and incense with celebrant

Acolyte Cross Acolyte
*handles processional cross and candles; used at procession, recession, Gospel;

Torchbearers and/or other Servers

Lectors and EMHCs
*read appointed readings, announcements and prayer petitions; assist at Holy Communion if necessary

Seminarians
*assists at Mass in any way necessary (i.e as servers, lectors, emhc etc)

Deacons
*assists at Holy Communion as Ordinary ministers of Communion

Deacon with Evangelarium
*Proclaims Gospel and assists at the offertory unless another deacon is delegated

Master(s) of Ceremonies

Priests

Monsignori

Principal Priest Celebrant and Homilist

For Solemn Pontifical concelebrated Masses and other episcopal ceremonies
