Is it licit for altar servers to leave the sanctuary to greet people during the sign of peace? References to GIRM/RS/whatever would be great either way.
Neither the GIRM nor RS mention this. However given that the celebrant is not supposed to leave, I think this would at least extend to the servers as well…Is it licit for altar servers to leave the sanctuary to greet people during the sign of peace? Why not??? I’ve seen the Priests, excuse me, Presiders, leave so why not the servers?? The GIRM, who cares about that troublesome document??? As long as the local bishop says it’s OK go for it!!! And even if he doesn’t go for it, and wants to follow the rules, just say he has a Pre Vatican II mindset and ignore him!!! It’s all about freedom of choice these days. Freedom, live the way you want and do the things you want. No rules, no obligations, just make the Mass the way you want and we’ll all be fine. God will understand. After all the Mass doesn’t really have anything to do with Him does it?Is it licit for altar servers to leave the sanctuary to greet people during the sign of peace? Oh? Where is that documented in the Church? I have never heard this. With a church full of people, the Eucharist is already protected.I like #2’s answer—the sarcasm is perfect—i have a really good priest in my parish so we don’t experience a lot of the abuses that are rampant in our church today. I had never thought about whether it is right or wrong for the altar servers to leave the altar, but the reason why the priest shouldn’t leave is because he should not leave the Body & Blood alone on the the altar, so technically if the priest stays with the Sacred Species—the altar servers could be allowed to leave the altar to shake hands----but according to the documents they should only shake hands with the people around them…so if they leave the altar at all they should shake hands only with people in the front seats.
no apology needed… I recognize, and sympathize with you… and those who complain that the Mass is too long, are part of the revival, I mean sign-of-peacers that has turned reverence into fellowship. Why not??? Again, could not resist the sarcasm on that. I apologize.

I am not sure what you are saying here? On which matter is the Church mum on?Oh? Where is that documented in the Church? I have never heard this. With a church full of people, the Eucharist is already protected.
There is nothing “technical” about it – the Church is mum on the matter.
I would also suggest that right at this point in time can be typically a very busy time for a server(s.) They might be placing additional purificators on the altar, clearing away the Sacramentary off the altar, etc.
82 … it is suitable that each person offer the sign of peace only to those nearby and in a dignified manner.
152 … The priest may give the sign of peace to the ministers, but always remains within the sanctuary, so as not to disturb the celebration. In the dioceses of the United States of America, for a good reason, on special occasions, (for example, in the case of a funeral, a wedding, or when civic leaders are present) the priest may offer the sign of peace to a few of the faithful near the sanctuary."
The GIRM says nothing about servers leaving the sanctuary. Keep in mind that in many parishes, leaving the sanctuary would mean taking two steps…I am not sure what you are saying here? On which matter is the Church mum on?
8-10 minutes for the kiss of peace? that’s nuts.I grew up without the Sign of Peace, but the people are used to it, and they like it.
But really, it should be kept to at most** 8-10 minutes**, so if the altar servers leave the sanctuary, they really shouldn’t be straying too far and keeping in touch with their primary duties, so the mass doesn’t get out of hand.
