My new spiritual director/confessor is learning to say the Tridentine Mass. Tridentine masses are not anywhere near where we live and most folks don’t even know what it is. I want to help him get a Tridentine Mass here as soon as possible. I am seriously looking into the FSSP after graduation and have studied Latin so, if I might be so bold, I know more than many here what my role would be during mass. Will Fr. need altar servers different from the “normal” ones for the NO Mass? Would if be proper to offer my assistance?

Thanks.

Pray that we might have more Tridentine Masses! 👍

Assuming the OF serving is done correctly, there are slight differences between OF and EF serving during Sung Mass. Most of it has to do with the differences in the structure of the Ordinary. For example in the OF the incensation of the altar is before the Asperges Me, but in the EF it’s after.

There are also minor distinctions with regards to local customs, so be sure to follow the directions of the resident MC.

Servers in the EF have a lot more Latin responses than do those who serve in the OF.

It sounds like you’re already familiar with the EF, in theory if not in actual attendance, so I’m not sure I quite understand the question.

You should of course offer your assistance!

The server in the EF has much more to do. Many responses, and a lot more activity. Get a hold of a missal with explanation. It’s not too hard, I serve for my brother-in-law when he does Mass at home.

God Bless

our priest often has to do the mass without servers here in peoria, il because the mass is very suppressed here. so no the priest does not have to have altar boys. some people sit in the front sometimes and do the altar boy responses. however, it is lovely when altar boys do participate. as a matter of fact we had a 76yr old man at a 5:00am mass serving as an altar boy. it was cool to see.
often a priest has completely done a tridentine mass without anyone present.

Do it --you won’t be sorry. My son and I are trained-yeah it took a while for ME but now we can serve together. Really kinda special.
