It’s a beautiful altar. Maybe you could find a parish or a mission church that could use it. That would be the best course of action to take, I think.

You are correct. There are no cross carvings or anything at all on the top of the altar.
Cool. Given the age, provenance, destiny, etc, I really don’t think there’s anything to be concerned about.

BTW, yes, it is quite lovely. It would be nice if it could be given a new lease on life for its intended purpose.

Thanks to everyone for your replies. It is very much appreciated.

God bless you all!

I have attempted to attach a photo, I hope it worked.
Normally they take a piece of marble about the size of pound of butter. A hole is drilled in it, the relic is added and then it is sealed with cement made from powdered marble and other ingreidnets. The marble is then attached to a relief cut in the mensa (table top) of the altar. You can readily see them and they are made for easy removal.

Given the size, material and age of your altar it’s not clear to me if it would have been consecrated or blessed but as long as the relic is not present you are good to go. Treasure your altar, don’t dispose of it. Chalices used to be consecrated for instance and they can be licitly owned by laypersons.
