I was reading that Futon Sheen book (The priest is not his own) the Archdiocese of Seattle sent (at the prompting of the dynamic duo of Frs Olsen and Lappe) to all the guy who went to the vocations retreat in june.
and I came across an especially profound statement. Keep in mind the entire book is about how a priest shares in Jesus’ mission completly, that is he too is the victim in the mass in an unbloody way of course. anyway the quote:
Bsp Fulton J Sheen:
When I say, ‘this is My body’, I must also mean, 'this is my
body’; when I say, "This is My blood’, I must also mean, ‘this is my blood.’

‘Thou, O Jesus, art not alone in the Mass’, the concecrating priest must pray in his soul. ‘On the cross, thou wert alone, in this mass, I am here with Thee. On the Cross, thou didst offer thyself, but now i offer myself with thee.’

The consecration then is, then, no bare, sterile repitition of the words of the last supper; it is an action, a reenactment, another Passion in me. ‘Here, dear jesus, is my body; tyake it. Here is my blood; take it. I care not if the “species” of my life remain–any particular duties in the school, parish, or office; these are only the “apperances”. But what i am in my itellect, my will–take, posess, divinize, so that may die with thee on the altar. Then the Heavenly Father, looking down, will say to thee and to me in Thee: “thou art my beloved son, with thee i am well pleased”’

BRIANS THOUGHTS:
I am glad so many priests i know realize that they have made themselvces the victim. they are Alter Christus (another christ) for the world, and that means configuring themselves COMPLETLY to Him, especially the cross. Sheen later notes that revelation speaks that the devil, may work wonders, he may lay hands gingerly on children, and many will indeed be decieved, but the elect shall know that he is not the Lord nor even His servant because he bears not the scars of the scourging nor of the cross nor of the spear: The false messiah negelcts suffering.

now here is the next passage that is also profound:

sheen said:
'When I come down from the altar I will then, more than ever, be in Mary’s hands as when she took Thee down from the cross. She was not a priest, but she could say the words of consecration in a way no priest ever said them of that body and blood. As she held thee she could say, as at Bethlehem, "This is my

body; this is my blood. No one in all
the world gave him body and blood but me."’

BRIANS THOUGHTS (warning may contain flaws, so dont tell the pope, im sorry if they occur, disregard them if they sound bad):
The laity is (and has always has been since pagan days) responsible for bringing the victim/offering (abraham is an exception, sheen says this is like and perhaps a type of the persecuted who are not martyred, they would sacrifice anything even their lives of their beloveds’ lives if needed but are not martyred). Mary did this in the most full way possible, along with Jesus who obviously was the only one with a fuller involvement in the offering. The mass involves food as elements of the rite, but it is a person (a divine person at that) that is actually sacrificed. we offer corporatly the work of our hands, and the fruit of the vine to praise God for his love, but then the sacrifice is made and we no longer have food but the very incarnation of God’s love. Mary (in a way, its kinda nebulous but remember that she agreed to the whole thing with her acceptance of the incarnation) offered the flesh of her flesh, the blood of her blood to and as the priest-victim who is Christ, who sacrificed it for us. This thought got me thinking, since the priest is an alter christus, could his family (esp mom and also dad) not feel like an alter maria? (though obvously this must never be understood sacrimentally or anything, and MUST bee see in the proper light and understanding lest one fall into some bizzare and heritical lines). They provided their own flesh and blood as both priest and victim (which truly a priest is, being configured to Christ)

I don’t have much to say about this idea, except that I think in a sense the whole of the congregation may fill the role you describe.

But to be pedantic, the grammatically correct Latin would be altera maria. 😉
