I have a high school study/prayer group in a public high school. We were discussing the formation of a well-informed conscience and the group wanted to know about the situation of a society in which an immoral act is judged to be good. Like “killing the infidel.” I told them that in such a situation one’s moral responsibility may be reduced because of the way he/she is raised, but that the innermost heart of every person must realize that it is wrong to kill innocent people, even if we disagree. What about a society in which evil is considered good, and v-v.

Isn’t that the same as the society in Rome that Christians found themselves in? Romans had no restrictions on abortion and often exposed undesirable babies for the wolves. Roman society took little to interest in widows and orphans.

How did the Christians respond? What did they do? Your answer probably lies there.
