Have you ever been at a Mass where the congregation was prompted to consider an expression of the Sign of Peace as follows:

" I forgive you "

" Please forgive me "

etc.?

Please no…and hasn’t that been done at the penitential rite?

Could it be an “expression” for the people to public confession to the community like in the “early, primitive” Church.

This is actually done during Forgiveness Vespers in the Eastern Churches at the start of the Great Fast , when we all ask each other’s forgiveness for any wrongs we have done them.

And yes - the Priest asks his parishioners to forgive him too.

we have a pentitential rite for this expression, the sign of peace is just that and there is a prescribed greeting and response, why mess with it? the person who is proposing this cannot be very familiar with the parts of the Mass and the reasons for the rubrics.

My answer would be to such a statement during the Sign of Peace would probably be a leery, “OK” with a question mark on the end. It’s usually “peace” or “peace be with you” and a head nod or quick handshake.

Not by the priest but I did take a “lapsed” catholic to Mass for the first time in 20 years, it was a disaster for several reasons, one of which was that some woman clutched him to her chest tightly and said “I forgive you” – he hasn’t back since. Sigh.
