Am I allowed to throw away a non-Catholic bible?

I am at a Catholic university right now and there is a bunch of men from Gideons International passing out bibles. I took one because I wanted to be able to technically not lie when I say “I already got one” and I think I felt bad for them. I have no want to leave the Church. This bible is heavily Protestant with saying like " My Decision to Receive Christ as my Savior" and “we encourage you to prayerfully seek out a local church.”

Can I throw this bible out?

Do I have to go to confession because I took this bible? (I have no intention of leaving the Church:D)

God Bless

I would recycle it instead. 🙂 Or donate it to a Protestant. 😉

I don’t think God expects that, once a Bible is printed, it be preserved in perpetuity for the rest of human history. There’s no problem with getting rid of it.

Next time, you can tell them that you already have a Bible (which I’m sure you do). You don’t have to feel obligated to take one of theirs.

I agree with Joe,
Recycle it rather than just toss it.
Or, if you wish to be more “reverential” about it, you could bury it, which is another form of recycling but ensures that no one else gets a hold of it.

Peace
James

Give it away - don’t destroy it. Many Christians would be only to glad to have a Bible, because great numbers of them do not. Some have no Svcripture at all 😦 If you have no use for it - give it to somebody who will. On even the strictest interpretation, there are no extra books added by Protestants, but only books missing from Protrestant Bibles: the books that Protestants do venerate as inspired are without exception identical withose accepted as canonical by Catholics; they are merely less numerous. Don’t destroy or dishonour a book that is holy; leave that to the sort of people who take Hosts from churches so as to dishonour them.

Receiving it is is not a sin - so it is not matter for confession.

The Bible is holy! I don’t care which one it is. You will burn in hell if you destroy it! Furthermore you will burn if you are not born again! If you would read the Bible and not believe the lies the Pope puts out you could make it to Heaven. I
so tired of hearing how much better the Catholics are. You guys totaly make up doctrine that is not in the Bible and believe whatever your child molesting priests tell you. Get saved and follow Jesus not Mary.

This is the reason it took me 46 years to become a Christian (statements like that!), and why I came to the Catholic Church!

The Gideons usually give away a small pocket New Testament with Psalms. Keep it or give it away!!

I threw away what some might call a Bible… but it had most NT books in it, plus half of it was their own commentary… I got it from Silver Ring Thing and it had a lot of implicitly anti-catholic stuff in it. I wouldn’t want to misguide anybody else by giving it to them!

Burning sounds like a good idea… but I don’t see how it would be wrong to destroy it so that nobody else is misguided by it.

Give it away to someone you know who might benefit from it or give it to a charity shop.
