After having a very big argument with my family, I briefly lost faith in the church. This only lasted for one hour. After an hour I felt very guilty for how I felt and changed my mind- I went to confession and was immediatley given absolution. The priest claimed that this heresy does not incur automatic excommunication due to the context of the situation. Is this accurate?

Have trust in your priest as your spiritual advisor.
God bless you.

Be at peace, trust your priest, and ignore anyone on this or any other social media website who tells you otherwise!

Please trust the judgment of your priest. Having an off day with an hour’s doubt does not amount to “heresy”, nor does it excommunicate anyone.

You should, ask your preist to explain to you .

I thought that heresy, like abortion, incurs an automatic excommunication. Meaning that your diocesan bishop is needed to forgive the sin. Am I wrong?

It seems like you are confusing sin with heresy.

Heresy is more specifically and narrowly defined. Heretics are usually clerics who are teaching something explicitly against the faith.

It does. But as such Canon 751 is pretty precise as to what constitutes heresy:

751 Heresy is the obstinate denial or obstinate doubt, after the reception of baptism, of some truth which is to be believed by divine and Catholic faith

One hour is not even close to obstinate. You should trust your priest next time.

Look up obstinate in the dictionary and go from there:

Obstinate : stubbornly refusing to change one’s opinion or chosen course of action, despite attempts to persuade one to do so.

Did someone, in authority, make attempts to convince you were wrong and you still refused? Did this happen over long period of time? Did a priest tell you “if you do not accept the truth you will be in a state of heresy?”?

This is not rocket science (obstinate is not that unusual or ambiguous of a term) and as most things it’s not black and white. Again, you should trust your confessor.

Did you spend that hour trying to spread a contrary doctrine to many people? Start your own “Taylorian Catholic Church”, ordain your own priests and appoint yourself the Bishop?

An hour of doubt during an emotional outburst is not heresy.

Listen to your priest.
