My pet is dying and I’m really upset; is it sinful to be attatched to a creature?

From my minimal knowledge of the teachings (baptized Catholic, but have only been pursuing with my beliefs strongly for little over a month), as long as you are not worshipping your pet as your god, I see nothing wrong with it. Grieving is natural, we’re all sad when a pet we love is dying. Hope you do alright through this awful process.
God Bless

Grief is right and necessary. There is no sin to grieve over the loss of a loved one, even a pet.

I would be more worried if you were not upset. Sorry you have to go through this. Praise to God for giving you this gift of companionship and the grace to love. Maybe even offer your pet back to Him in thanksgiving for the time you got to spend with your pet.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with mourning the death of a dear family member, and never let anyone tell you otherwise. God put animals on this world for human beings to love and cherish. He gave them to us to be our true companions and to be living examples of God’s love for us. My pet cat (named Cuddles, and she is very cuddly) is a little sweetheart who never fails to show me what unconditional love is all about.

The relationship between a beloved pet an its owner is a blessed one. Did you know that St. Francis referred to all animals as “Brother” or “Sister”? Animals may not have human souls, but they are defiantly persons because each one has its own individual personality. Animals have thoughts and feelings just as we do (lesser of course, but still there). I think that your grief honors your pet and the God who created it.

Lazarus was a creature and Jesus cried when he died. Now, I know that a pet is not a human but we still get very attached because as loving people we love all life. That’s why so many people spend their lives caring for wildlife and injured animals. Your sensitive nature and the love that you have for your pet is not a sin but rather a demonstration of your compassion that makes you the caring person that you are. I am very sorry to hear of your loss and I pray that God gives you comfort through those very people who are touched by your compassion…teachccd

There is nothing wrong with grieving. It’s a part of letting go. Which we have to do with all of the things of this world one day. The only way you would be in question is if you started insisting that you pray for the animals soul, or something like that. But realizing that the animal was put on earth to give you joy, there is nothing wrong with. .

Actually in today’s world isn’t the death of an animal far more tragic than that of a human? Excuse the sarcasim.

Snowbird, this was my immediate thought when I read your post.

My two cats are sitting on chairs beside me at the moment (the bigger one needs a chair to himself) and I know I will devatsted when their time comes. I am also sure that domestic animals know when their person/people die and mourn for them.

Absolutely not! I’m sure your pet was/is a loyal friend to you and his absence will be painful. Your feelings of sadness are natural. Never feel guilty about natural feelings. God gave us the ability to love and have compassion for all of His creation - animals included. I’m so sorry about your pet. I’ve been there!
