Ever since seeing the Exorcist as a kid I had a time where I was scared of being posessed. I would get freaky images in my head and just be irrationaly scared of it.

Now after seeing previews for The Exorcism of Emily Rose, when I think about it, I get worried like when I was a kid and I even start seeing freaky little linda blair in my head (eek)…

Does this sound like a mental hospital horror story?
It takes alot to scare me when it comes to movies, but the topic of hell will always send chills down my spine. I have been a really selfish person when it comes to God, always comitting selfsh sins before him, and I’ve done it to many times to be forgiven and I want to believe that I will be forgiven (since all sins are forgivable) but God is all knowing all powerful and I really don’t deserve to go to heaven.

With this grim outlook on my path when I die, no wonder I am scared of anything devil related. But am I crazy or has anyone else been unbelievably scared by the exorcist and the subject of anything hell/demonic?

Have you spoken with a priest about this? I would encourage you to do so.

The priests of EWTN have actually advised AGAINST seeing horror movies, and especially those of this type. I’d provide a link if I could, but someone asked a similar question on Web of Faith, and Fr. Trujillio gave a wonderful answer.

So maybe check out EWTN? They have a Q&A area.

To be clear, I never thought I was actually posessed, I was scared of becoming posessed… Wow, I still sound like a nut job

And I have no idea what EWTN is…

Hey, hey, hey! Calm down.

No one is deserving of heaven but God’s mercy knows no limit.

Just look at the life of the saints.

Take St. Paul for example he asisted in the deaths of early christians.

St Augustine, in his teens turned away from the Church and became a Manichee, a member of a pagan sect that believed there were two gods—one good, the other evil—locked in eternal conflict for human souls. In the end, of course, his mother’s prayers were answered. Augustine took instruction from the great St. Ambrose and was baptized by him on the night of the Easter Vigil, April 24-25, 387.
St. Margaret of Cortona (1247-1297) was only 13 or 14 when she became the mistress of a young nobleman named Arsenio. Although her lover made it clear that he would never marry her, Margaret lived with Arsenio for nine years, and even had a son with him. She hoped at some point her lover would change his mind and become her husband. He never did. When Arsenio was murdered, the shock caused Margaret to reevaluate the path she had chosen. In time, her conversion led her to take vows as a Franciscan sister.

I could keep going but the point will be the same, we are all sinner and God will forgive us, we have to ask for the forgiveness.

I think watching those movies tends to make me believe more. Seeing that the devil has an actual power of sorts startles me into examining my faith more.

Not that fear is a productive way of invigorating faith, but it certainly helps jump start mine sometimes.

eh, just an opinion, really.

Sound reasonable to me. When I was in high school, one of the priests one day recounted the exorcism story upon which the original book was based. For weeks afterward I would lie in bed at night, afraid that the devil might be trying to possess me. Just one of those things. After that, I avoided all exorcism and possession stories whatsoever.

Good idea Jim, and to be honest… I wouldn’t be having this problem if there wasn’t a trailer for “Emily Rose” on every 5 minutes on every channel

A very good reason not to watch scary films, some folks like myself are very impressionable with this genre so I just do not watch or read that sort of thingmaybe, you just should avoid it too, but yes reassure yourself in any case…

I’ve been scrambling for the remote every time it comes on 😛 , so I don’t have to see it. Those kind of stories have the same effect on me, so I avoid them completely.

I still (20+ yrs later) can’t sleep on my back because of that movie. If you’re nuts, I’m right there with you.
