Am I holding out on God?

I play a computer game called Fallout:New Vegas. The game is rated M and has some very immoral content, such as violence and sexuality, but I do not feel like I will become violent of lustful because of these. I’m not tempted to sin because in this game, you have free will and can be good or evil, and I choose to be as much like Christ as I can. It kinda gives me a “WWJD” moment with limited options.

But there’s a deeper, more complicated problem with this game. It’s that I somehow feel like I’m holding out on God and trying to justify a sin. I only play this game in my free time, and my devotion to God is FAR more important. would never miss Mass or put this above my faith life. What do you think?
 
I think that game is awesome! one of my favs and I’m a pro-life, anti-death penalty, weekly Mass attending, 29 year old virgin with a great relationship with God.

God comes first, the game is my spare time attempt to work out my frustrations over my daily life - plus, its just plain fun.

Others may dissagree adn that’s their right, only you know how you feel about this game in regards to your relationship with God, if you feel somehow that you shouldn’t play it, don’t, otherwise, enjoy, and watch out for those deathclaws.

And in case you’re wondering, yes, I did nuke Megaton in FO3.
 
I know how you feel…I’m a gamer myself. I love World of Warcraft…and and one time I felt that my time on the game was taking away from more important things in my life. Now I limit myself, only play long after everyone is in bed. However, one thing you said concerns me…

Your own words tell you exactly what you need to do. You call it a problem and you feel like you are holding out on God. Even if you only MIGHT be holding out on God (sinning or near occation of sin), is it worth risking you relationship with Him? Maybe take a break from the game. Do you find yourself inclined to lust or violent thoughts at all? Would you be embarrassed if our Heavenly Mother watched what you watched on the game? If you think it might be a problem…it probably is a red flag from your own conscience. It is also a call to examine other areas in your life to see if you are doing/or not doing what you are called by Christ to do.

Interesting that you question someone else’s faith when you started this thread questioning your own. How does the choice one makes in what amounts to nothing more than interaction with a bunch of 1s and 0s nullify their faith? It doesn’t. It’s a game. If you can’t distinguish the game from your own real life morality then that’s on you.

I played Fable and Fable II where you have a distinct abilty to be good or bad (you can even give yourself horns if you’re bad enough). The first one I was good the whole way through the second one I was bad. I got bored and quit playing the second one because being bad made the game itself too easy so it was boring and never once found myself being immoral in my real life.

It’s a game. People that want to equate it to how we function in real life are simply too weak minded to separate fantasy from reality and leave them both where they belong. I mean no offense but that’s the truth of it.

I was being sarcastic. And I did think about that, too. I’ve been thinking about it this morning and I’ve figured I just need to get my priorities straight. God and school are far more important than a silly game. I’ll just play it in my free time when I’m sure I have nothing else to do. And it would be a great thing to give up for Lent this year :newidea:
