I pray the rosary every day, but it normally takes me 12-14 minutes to pray an entire rosary. I have heard it is supposed to take around 20 minutes. Am I praying the rosary too fast, and if so, do you have any suggestions on how I can slow it down?

If you’re comfortable with your prayer pace and you’re meditating on the mysteries okay and not just rushing to finish, I wouldn’t worry about the time it’s taking you to pray. Some people pray naturally fast.

If you want to slow yourself down, use a rosary video on Youtube. They usually take 20 to 25 minutes. You can adjust the speed in the Youtube controls if you need it a little slower or a little faster.

I used to take 10 minutes. I find the more I pray the rosary, I tend to meditate on the mysteries more and it now takes me 15-20 minutes.

I take about 25 minutes, but that’s partly because I generally add various optional prayers in between the decades and at the beginning/ end.

If I do a Scriptural Rosary where you take time out to read scripture for each Hail Mary, it can take even longer.

For me it takes around 15 minutes and for some reason I feel like I’m going too slow.

Takes me around thirty minutes. I think about the mysteries in some detail and that tends to slow down my prayer. I also think about the words I’m using when I say the Our Father and Glory be. It’s tempting to repeat prayers parrot fashion but I try to remember that they’re not just words, they have great meaning and I’m personally saying them to God and Our Lady! Not just words.

Thanks everybody for your responses. I am taking what you are saying into account. I do feel I need to focus more on meditating on the mysteries, and that could slow me down a little bit.

20 minutes sounds about right. If you are from the East Coast you may speak a bit faster. Infusing the Rosery with meditations may ‘slow’ you slightly, but do add the meditations. However, what works well for you, works for me, too and makes the Blessed Mother happy.

Sometimes praying the rosary is like driving down a lonely stretch of road and you don’t even realize your foot is on the gas pedal!

But the rosary is a voluntary prayer. There are no rules (as in you’re commiting a sin if you do it wrong), but there are best practices.

That being said, if you only have 10 minutes (and not because you want to surf the Internet instead of pray), I’m pretty sure Our Lady understands.

It’s really just a matter of pacing yourself. You might consider praying in chant.

I’m a slow rosary pray-er. It takes me at least 25-30 minutes. If for some reason I can only fit it in for 10 minutes of my day (rare) I’d rather say just one mystery slowly and with meditation that rush through the whole rosary.
You might consider breaking it up throughout the day and taking more time with each mystery.

St. Thomas tells us that we ought not to pray too slow nor too fast, but just at the right pace. The pace varies from individual to individual.

I do the same, where I add in additional thoughts and prayers while I’m praying the Rosary too, so it probably takes me about 25 minutes on average to complete a Rosary.

I’m saying this comment in general to the OP…

I don’t think that length of time matters when saying the Rosary, like the other members are saying as well, as long as you say the Rosary prayerfully and thoughtfully. 🙂

May God bless you on your journey of faith.

You can’t pray wrongly. Be at peace. Just pray as it works for you.

God sets no rules about praying, except to pray

We are not to fall for any prayer peer pressure to pray a certain way. I was recently at the funeral of a 97 yo. In her eulogy, it was said how she had outlived all her friends and contemporaries. This took all the peer pressure to conform away from her. And it was such a grace in her old age.

It’s not important how anyone else prays the rosary, it is only important that you pray and have your conversation with God through your prayer.

Its also totally acceptable to focus solely one one theme and meditate on that through the Rosary, a few themes or all of them.

I think the fastest rosary I’ve ever said was 30 minutes. I intentionally say the prayers slowly. I pause at “Jesus” in each Hail Mary making sure to consider the mystery as it relates to Him. I love the rosary. Such a beautiful prayer.

Thanks everybody! I have been enjoying reading all your responses.
