I understand what you are saying. But it begs the question of full knowledge of our actions. Can we wound our consciences so much that we loose full knowledge of what we do?

Yes, absolutely. However, it is unlikely that the initial process of wounding would have lacked knowledge (and, actually, it is theologically impossible). The first mortal sin is harder to justify than the thousandth. But the first mortal sin separates us from Grace, and consigns us to hell. The thousandth does not consign us to a worse fate, but it makes it more difficult for us to repent and return to Grace, because we have become accustomed to sin.
