am i sinning?

I just recently applied at a company by the name of MCI, it acts as a relay service to all the handicapped in voice or hearing to other outside, friends family, etc. However while being interviewed for this position, it came to a point were i had to verbally read of this sheet what was to be expected and what i have to say. We are not allowe to cnsor anything, so if they cuss, or say the worst of things i either have to repeat it or typoe depending on the situation. I was told that i must read this sheet of examples, of sentences that i would run into or have to say, in it were some pretty horrible stuff. like G**damn, F-word, and other profaine horrible things. if i take this job am i sinning? i have to relay anything and everything that is said, and that includes the words that i had just stated. i need help

I don’t think so. The people MCI serves in this case will rely on you to tell them what people are saying to them, and they want people to know what they are saying. How else are they going to have that, if no one will relay what they are saying without stepping in and tossing out bits the relay doesn’t like? If anyone is offended, they are all quite able to hang up, and no one, but no one, is going to blame you!

I’ll ask you this: do you think a priest who has someone confess a murder to him but who doesn’t report the murder is sinning? Of course not. He is the instrument of a sacrament, and that takes precedence. Likewise, attorneys and doctors have a similar privelege. Actors may use foul language in performance, if the message of the performance art warrants it. Generally, it is not moral to use foul language, but as in these cases, you would have a legitimate reason for doing so: that is, giving the gift of real, uncensored communication.
 
I may be way off base here, but I don’t think objectively it would be sinning. I would liken the position to a court secretary whose job it is to record all of the proceedings. If a witness used foul language, he or she would be required to type it. The purpose would be to make an accurate account, and even if the language used was less-than-polite or even blasphemous, the typist would not be the source of such language.

If you need this position and are, if not comfortable, at least willing to use improper language simply in order to be accurate in your transmission, then I would think you could take that position with a clear conscience. The job needs to be done by someone and it would be better that a morally upright person perform it. It provides a service to the handicapped, which is a wonderful thing.

On the other hand, if you are uncomfortable using words of such a nature, even if you are only transmitting accurately another person’s speech, and can reasonably avoid taking the job, I would recommend listening to your feelings. They may be an indication that such a job would be terribly unfulfilling, stressful, or otherwise unsuitable.

In your case it is not a sin- you are just relaying information. Swearing is not normally a mortal sin, unless you are using God’s name irreverently (but if this is a habit, rather than an intentional cursing of God, then it is not a mortal sin, but is a venial one), or are trying to hurt someone. If you swear because you are in pain, or are really upset, or are scared, it is a venial sin. If you just use crude language habitually, but are as careful as you can not to speak that way around people who it may offend, then it is not a sin at all- it’s just bad manners.
 
I think translators (not intrerpreters) have a similiar mandate–they have to translate specifically what is being said. An interpreter can change a “change the channel, you blockhead!” to “he would greatly encourage you to change the channel”, the translator would have to say it exactly.

If you’re uncomfortable with the idea of it, I’d recommend you to find another job. If you need the money, though, take the job until you can find something else. It may be that the situation never actually comes up during your employment.

i am not quite sure if this is what you said or not, but here’s the circumstance, we have to say or type whatever is being said, without question, the example you gave was great, i wish i was able to do that, only we can’t it has to be word for word xactly/ you have helped thank you!
