Am I the only Catholic who dislikes these songs at mass?

I really dislike these following songs sung at mass: Morning has Broken, Kumbaya, and They will Know we are Christians by our love. The first two I find vapid. The last speaks a truth but often I associate it with experience of the other two from my youth as they were often played together.

I can no longer listen to Amazing Grace since someone pointed out it could be sung to the Gilligan’s Island theme song…but the other songs you mentioned, I’m good with.

Thanks for sharing…I think.

I am sure every Catholic on the face of the earth has songs they like at Mass and songs they dislike at Mass. I prefer not to discuss mine here because the song I hate is likely to be someone else’s favorite and vice versa, and whether I might have to listen to a dislikable song for 2 minutes at Mass is not a big issue in my day.

Muting thread now

Do you really hear these songs sung at Mass where you live these days? I haven’t heard “They’ll Know We Are Christians by Our Love” sung at Mass since the 1970s. I’m not sure if I ever heard Kumbaya sung at Mass, but we used to sing it around the campfire when I was in Cub Scouts. “Morning Has Broken” predates Cat Stevens by about 40 years. The words were written by Eleanor Farjeon in the 1930s and the melody is older than that. I sometimes hear that same melody used at Mass now, but with different words, “Christ Be Beside Me,” I think.

I have a certain nostalgia for all three, and I like what each one expresses. I know many people more learned than myself say they are not appropriate for Mass, but as I say, I haven’t heard them actually sung at Mass around where I live for many years.

Nope not the only one. Most of the songs we sing at Mass are strait from Christian radio top 25 lists. I have no problem not sining or even changing the words as I think these things are not part of the Mass.

The first two owe used to sing in our primary school watch was in no way Christian at all and yet every morning the whole school would sing a Christian hymn.

I do like the third one, I haven’t heard it for years though.

Amazing grace is dreadful.

We still sing “They’ll Know We Are Christians By Our Love” periodically, and also “Christ Be Beside Me”. I don’t recall having ever sung “Morning Has Broken” at Mass, but it comes around during morning Liturgy of the Hours each cycle. I still have the single by Cat Stevens, although I haven’t tried playing any of my records (which did get wet) since Harvey flooded our home. Maybe once I locate some speakers for the turntable.

I still hear occasionally Morning has Broken and They will know we are Christians by Our Love. I haven’t heard Kumbaya My Lord in several years.

We sang both “They Will Know We Are Christians By Our Love” and “ Morning Has Broken” at our Vigil Mass tonight (yes, I know that morning broke many hours before). I would wonder if our Pastor had been reading this thread but I know he doesn’t use the conputer. I mentioned this to our musical director but she said she isn’t on this site. Must be the Holy Spirit at work.
