Someone I know on DeviantART sent me a video on youtube about werewolves being a part of satanic worship. While it’s true hundreds of years ago there was such practices the fact is we all know werewolves are just myths. In fact, werewolves came from all sorts of different religions and beliefs and all of them were superstitions. Still werewolves are a popular thing on deviantart and I ended up finding a liking to them when I got into drawing anthropomorphic animals.

Anyway, the video I watched was an explanation of werewolves in the occult. However, the person who also uploaded that video had another video which implied that Sunday worship was anti-God and there would be a mandatory law requiring Sunday worship. In other words, it was an anti-Catholic video and that also gives me reason to discredit what was said. Sadly, a lot of the Christians who combat the occult (which is a good thing, especially in a culture that promotes thing like Ouija boards to kids) also place such things on the Catholic Church, implying the Church came from Satan.

Also, I really wanted to know whether I am really wrong to like werewolves because I created a story where my protagonist seeks the aid of a Catholic Priest named Fr. John Silver-Blood who is also a werewolf. John isn’t one of those vicious man-eating werewolves but a very holy man. I even wrote a backstory about him. And J.R.R. Tolkien did use a wizard for his LOTR story.

Here’s my thinking.

You have a Catholic like Tolkien who has all kinds if creatures. The thing with his creatures in his stories are that they are by their nature one thing. They are physical and although strange, they are “as God created them”. They don’t transform under some power.

The exception being the wizards and the evil one Saron. And all of the wizards sort of have this battle between good and evil sort of like the angels, some fell and some did not.

The idea of werewolves is a bit different because, if I understand it right, by a spell or one other evil force they are transformed. Something like that should not be glorified.

I think that’s ultimately your answer. Does what I do bring Glory to God and the truth? Or to evil and the occult culture?

It’s one thing to have villains in a story. It’s another thing to glorify and honor the villains.

Your story about a good and holy werewolf sounds interesting. The previous poster points out some possible contradictions or theological difficulties, but perhaps you can iron those out in the fiction.

By the way, Hallowe’en is coming up soon, and I know that a lot of Catholic children (and more than a few adults) are going to pretend to be monsters and demons. I myself do not have a problem with that. It’s pretend. I don’t think it harms our relationship with God or one another.

That’s my opinion, and this being Catholic Answers Forums, other opinions are sure to roll in.

Peace to all (including vampires, werewolves, and zombies :D).

It will only become a sin if you become obsessed with werewolves. Your story sounds interesting. Though the name of the priest seems more like that of someone who would hunt werewolfs. Silver being the natural weakness of werewolves and all

There’s nothing inherently wrong with liking werewolves. If you got so obsessed that you spent more time thinking about werewolves than anything else, bordering on worship, then it would be a problem. But that’s a danger that can happen with anything.

But just because werewolves are historically evil in the world of lore (although these days they are often depicted as the good guys) doesn’t mean it’s wrong to be interested in them. Wizards fall under the category of “bad”, especially with the Bible directly condemning them, but that doesn’t mean I’m doing anything wrong by thinking Gandalf is one of the coolest fictional characters ever. 😉

Of course, I don’t glorify the occult or the villains. Like I said, I have a werewolf priest who is a holy man and devoted God and His service in my story. When it comes to fiction it could be anything that makes a werewolf transform, be it a spell or science or some natural ability that was suppressed for generations.

I think I understand a bit what you mean. I LOVED the series of books, and movies, Twilight. (Be advised, this post containers many spoilers for anyone wanting to read these, or see these films!)

It had all that, vampires, werewolves and such. What I think I, and a lot of women, liked about it was that it was one of the very few movies which portrayed a couple waiting till marriage to be fully intimate! I have a hard time thinking of modern movies where a couple actively decides to wait, and that part is really beautiful. There are 4 books, and there isn’t full intimacy till Book 4 and only after they are married (though there are some moments where they do come quite close!). Do you realize how rare that is in romance movies or books in modern times to encourage waiting till after marriage?

Then, it’s sweet how the hero defends the heroine lots of times at risk to himself. I think a lot of us modern women have never, ever, experienced a man standing up for, defending, a woman. It’s something we only fantasize and dream about! I sometimes just turn it on and simply watch some of those scenes where he defends her. I wonder if we are trying to live some of this romance and secret wish to be just once be loved enough for a man to defend us, even if it is vicariously!

Also, Bella has a bunch of men just absolutely falling over her, I think at least 4 head-over-heels in love with her! I never even so much as went to my own prom! It has a prom scene which more or less ends happily ever after, in the romantic sense. She’s literally got men fighting over her. Subconsciously, I think this appeals to women.

What I don’t care for as much, now that I think about it, is that the female lead is very liberal, believes sex is fine before marriage and has other more liberal views. She wants to keep her own name, thinking to do otherwise would be somehow giving up her identity. She encourages another woman to be the initiator in relationships. She is not traditional, but her love is. That’s part of his charm.

The vampire character is said to have been made a vampire against his will, as are the others, with the exception of Bella, who wants to be a vampire. Another vampire character warns her that once she’s a vampire, she will do anything for blood, even kill, and this turns out to be true. She once wants to kill a human for blood.

The werewolf characters are also werewolves but not of their choosing, either.

The vampires drink either animal or human blood. One vampire character is actually a former priest, who in the books, actually persecuted vampires. He is portrayed as exercising remarkable self restraint for a vampire in that he’s a doctor, works around blood. He initially tried to commit suicide (in the book) for being a vampire but later actually created vampires to make up his own family.

It does make drinking animal blood look to be just fine.

It is just fantasy, but otherwise, it is basically a romance. Although, the romance is rather unhealthy in its obsessiveness when one thinks of it. The couple literally can’t live without each other and would go into a severe depression or even be suicidal if separated.

The female lead, Bella, is portrayed to be “strong” in that she is very liberal and independent. Yet, I find her weak in the sense that she is very permissive, sexually.

Further, the priest character says he believes he will go to hell, that he damned for being a vampire. Yet ,he creates other vampires.

Bella wants to be a vampire and says she doesn’t care about her soul.

Edward, the male lead says he’s a vampire, has killed a lot of people and wanted to kill her (Bella). To which, she responds, “I don’t care”.

So, I had bought the series, seen these movies bunches of times. They really are my favorite movies, but I forced myself to stop watching them, or if I do, I only watch certain parts, due to the above…with the vampires, werewolves, etc. I think the Bishop’s Council even is okay with them, but I have had my doubts.

Since they are just pretend, it’s OK. I really doubt that werewolves were ever worshipped.

And they can be good guys. Monroe of Grimm (a very fun show!) is a good werewolf.

To trust some anti-Catholic on such matters and to avoid writing about werewolves because of something he thinks would be, as Lithuanian proverb goes, “to run from the wolf and into the bear” (pun was not originally intended). Reading or watching anti-Catholic materials for no good reason is listed in at least some examinations of conscience (for example, ewtn.com/library/spirit/examcons.txt: “5 Do I unnecessarily read or listen to those who oppose or belittle what I know are truths of my Catholic faith?”). Writing about werewolves is not.

Love Monroe! He is my favorite character on TV right now (and Hershel from “The Walking Dead”). He and Rosalie are adorable!

“Grimm” is cute and Kolchak-light. My guilty pleasure. 🙂

Werewolves can be ok…

Vampires on the other hand…stay away from sparkly ones.

There was an incident in Rhode Island in 1997 where an entire family was held captive in their rural farm house by a pack of 4-5, seven ft tall…what they described as being werewolf looking, I can find the newspaper article and link to it if anyone is interested, I first learned of it from MSN website, I was shocked to hear the family called the police, but they refused to come out LOL

This got me curious, so I did some more searching online and found pretty many cases in the upper midwest of people encountering werewolf type creatures, Some of them have seen these things up close and say it is a cross between a man and a wolf/dog, as it has a long snout, and lots of teeth. Alot of people have suggested it may just be a sasquatch these people are seeing, but others say those are not aggressive like the werewolf like beasts these people have seen. If you Google it, you will find hundreds, if not 1000s of sightings and encounters in MI, WI, and few other midwest states.

I tend to believe they are probably demonic in nature, or involves witchcraft/curses, although I did read one guys theory that lived in one of these areas where alot of these things have been seen, he says the military had a base nearby during WW2 era and they did alot of experiments, he thinks they are the result of some bad genetic experiments, this is possible, but I dont know if they would be evil in nature as a result of some experiment gone awry.

If anyone is truly interested in this topic and wants to read some eye-opening encounters, let me know and I will send links. I have done alot of research into this topic and have learned quite a bit since my first time hearing about it.

I even learned there was a incident not 5 blocks from my house at a bowling alley late one night, which a chase resulted and police were also present, they have the video tape of nearby security camera at a gas station of this thing going past the window!

Eagleswing,
I also wrote a story about a priest once who was afflicted as a werewolf, and I treated it as a disease like alcoholism as I recall. He only changed when he got angry, and in the story he attacked a man who was abusing a girl. If you think of being a werewolf as being an affliction, it opens up more possibilities.
Mikekle, I really doubt any of those tales are true. There are no werewolves. There may be sasquatch, but they are apparently a type of bears. I would really have to see solid evidence of any “genetic experiments gone bad.”
Let’s not be superstitious.

Yes, definitely, knock wood.

you know, something like that quite happened to me sometime ago, there was a videogame which I used to play, there you could have pets, and one of them was a demon, so i began to think, what if im attracting the anger of demons by playing this, I knew that there were things that would of course anger them, like praying and such, but i thought that since those things were related to God, it was the right thing to do and God would support me, but on the other stuff i would be alone and open to their attacks.

then I began searching in the net, and I did not found anything from Catholic websites, so i went with protestant ones, so at the end I ended up very scared, every time someone mentioned a movie or game where a demon appeared, or i remembered something, i got very scared because i was opening myself to demon attacks. Thank God, I later found Catholic.net and there I could ask some theologian, and other members and told me to just calm down, also when i found about the Catholicnews site and their movie reviews and saw that many of the movies I feared might have goten an O, but it was due to moral reasons, and they did not even mentioned what I feared. finally when talking more calm to a Priest and when i saw what people here talked about games and stuff that I avoided, I began to relax. I’m still somewhat affected by that, but I think i have gotten much better.

so to make the story short, I say you go with more caution about those videos and stuff, dont let them fill your head with weird stuff.
