I thought it was very appropriate in Apologetics, because it describes a large segment of our ‘Catholic’ population.

Then why put American only to this category? Catechizing with a sense of mocking is a great way to go…wooo hooo!

It’s somewhat unbelievable that people would either

a) take this seriously enough to find it malicious

b) write multiple posts defending how “mocking” it was

I found it to be fairly representative of questions I’ve heard from other people and myself, at times. It gave me a good chuckle.

As for it being in the apologetics forum, it’s a nice change from the myriad of “how can we prove God exists” and “----- disprives evolution!!!”. As someone said, if it were put in the water cooler forum it wouldn’t be seen by very many.

Not being Catholic, I understood only about half of the references on the list. Still, I had no doubt that the list was offered as good faith (and ironic) humor.

I thought it was meant to be funny and start conversation. I’ve run into most of these amongst the Catholics I know. We have got to get some better quality Catechisis and impart a sense of faith better.
The last item about baptism doesn’t make sense, though. Even the majority of Cafeteria Catholics baptise their babies within a few months . Unless I’m missing something that goes on in the rest of the country. I could be just overthinking…

I’m not too sure about that one. But I do know several cafeteria Catholics who waited to get their children baptised for 6 to 9 months or so because they view it as a social event and turn it into a big party/family reunion.

I’m soooo in trouble. I’m not a Catholic–I was baptized at 8! I’ll turn in my ID card, but you’ll have to change the secret handshake. It’s that or erase my memory.

The only one on the list I don’t get is the “your priest has an accent.” Why would his hillbilly drawl be a problem? Oh wait, that’s the parishoners. Actually, we have a formerly Vietnamese priest in our parish now and he gives some of the most orthodox homilies I’ve heard in a long time.

I’ll be in trouble for mentioning this, but our choir has an affinity for “all are welcome.” I cringe every time I hear it.

If it was in the water cooler/back fence forum I would have never seen it.

I got a good laugh too, but then it made me sad…and grateful. I have to agree with Br. Rich…I would never have seen it in the water cooler or back fence sections. Sad because at times I think this is how alot of Catholics think, and grateful because I moved to the midwest and my kids are actually being taught to be faithful to the magisterium. But I do have to say…getting sick of All are Welcome, Pan de Vida, and Pescador de Homres, and a few more! But if my biggest gripe is our music directors choices…not too bad!

I was brought up on the east coast, and I think I escaped just in time. My mom only goes to mass when I am in town (and she works with nuns ), my oldest sister only goes when she has to as well (I don’t think her daughters are in PSR). My brother recently remarried on a beach with a protestant minister, my other sister, while she goes to church and her kids go to PSR, she doesn’t think there is anything wrong with civil unions…

What happened? My family was always involved with the church, always went to mass, CCD and confession… But after dad died, well things just haven’t been the same for them.

On the otherhand, I am so very grateful that my kids are involved in prolife activities, Catholic/Christian witness, apologetics, community service and being the best they can be. My kids actually get upset when I can’t make it to mass because I am not feeling well. It was worse before they learned to drive, now they just go on their own if I can’t go.

I really hope this means that I have done something right… but only time will tell. My oldest doesn’t live at home anymore and I was concerned that he was working on Sunday mornings, but last Sunday we met for a late dinner and he showed up in a shirt and tie. When I asked why, he told me he was going to mass since he had to work this morning. I was much relieved! My middle son is trying to start a Christian skateboarding club at his public high school… the school is paranoid about any reference to religion even in it’s clubs! My daughter goes to a Catholic high school and has joined the prolife club, altar servers before school once a week, volunteers for all kinds of community activities like our annual school thing for low income folks…(school supplies, new socks, shoes and underwear, gently used other clothing items) and the Christmas party for low income folks in our area. I don’t force them to do any of this, but I do support them in any way I can…rides, friends spending the night to work on these projects…etc.

Of course I was joking! It was something I found funny and thought I’d share on the forums, but I guess I picked the wrong one? Clearly, it’s not supposed to describe every american catholic, just some traits that are unique to the US and distinguish it from catholicism in other places and time periods.

Sorry if I went overboard on your intentions but most of that list was simply offensive to me and others. In my view it publicly degraded Catholicism, I know of nobody who subscribes to the mass majority of those views, maybe there are some radical “catholic” liberals who do but in reality they arent really Catholic. That isnt representative of Catholicism in America as far as I have seen and I say this from the perspective of someone who lives in a liberal state (and liberal county).
