I’ve watched every season and I am really liking this one ! I am starting to see some of the connections from past seasons!

Is that why today you have such a fascination for this kind of stuff??? God Bless, Memaw
Probably not. I’ve always loved a good ghost story even before that. I loved scooby doo way before that movie. I’d say my first “horror” memory was watching Mickey Mouse haunted mansion on one of those “click” viewers with the circular disks…

I like the “mockumentary” idea. Tying it in to a historical colony (Roanoke) lends itself to a better story. It’s much cleaner.

Don’t want to say too much because the op like a lot of people is operating a year behind on Netflix so…

I just got out of the shower (another time where there was no knife silhouette outside the shower curtain *whew) and I was thinking of this thread.
The idea that perhaps we could better ourselves by not watching this. And then I almost laughed so hard I fell. Let’s take last night for instance. A nice Sunday night, after a day with the fam and a wonderful Mass. We head on home. What was on tv? Well the debate. And we are told in the CCC to be informed responsible citizens right!? So let’s sit down and do our civic (and actually spiritual) duty.
A victim of an underage rape
“Locker room talk”
Victims of presidential assault and harassment
War
Mutilation of babies as a right.

Ok well that’s on about 20 channels

And our refuge EWTN? Let’s look at the past couple years and subjects. Gay marriage, adultery, abuse.

Geesh, ok well, I guess praying the rosary and putting the kids to bed is a good idea, then perhaps when they are all asleep I can turn the tv back on for a nice escape that isn’t as trashy as what was on tonight…
Ah yes, there it is, AHS…

To those of you who think that horror as a genre is bad/evil/we shouldn’t waste our time on it, would you say that we should avoid the following stories?

–While on his way home, a man encounters various monsters including, but not limited to, a giant who smashes the brains of the main character’s friends out on a rock in order to eat those unfortunate men; a giant, intelligent whirlpool; a creature that’s a woman on her top half, but masses of vicious, man-eating wolves beneath; and a witch who turns men into literal animals. When he finally does get home, he then slaughters dozens of other men who have been hitting on his wife in his absence, though none of them have actually slept with her.

–A woman insists that spirits are speaking to her, dons mens’ clothing, and assembles an army before being accused of witchcraft by the local authorities, at which point she’s burned alive.

–A man who is over-fond of gambling and rather…less 😉 …fond of hard work wanders into a cave, and after what he perceives as an afternoon of gambling and drinking with some strange men, falls asleep. On waking, he discovers that the strange men are, in fact, magical creatures who have given him, in the form of the alcoholic drink he’d been enjoying, a substance that caused him to sleep for decades and decades, until his children and his children’s children are all dead and gone.

–A man falls in love with a woman, rapes her, and then asks her father for her hand in marriage. He agrees, provided that the would-be husband and all his friends and family convert to Judaism, that being his religion. The suitor concedes, and as part of the process, undergoes circumcision. While they’re all recovering from this operation, which is carried out without any sort of painkiller and under primitive conditions, the father of the bride and his friends and family break into the house and murder all of them.

Disgusting? Horrifying? Why would anyone read or watch such dreadful stuff…

…as the Odyssey, a biography of Joan of Arc, Washington Irving’s classic “Rip van Winkle,” and the book of Genesis, chapter 34, respectively. 😉

I

Ps. When I was a little tyke there was this movie that came on tv every St Patrick’s day. I think it was called Darby O’gill and the little people. I swear it was Disney… I was wondering if you have seen it and your take on it. Do you find it stereotypical and offensive? I think it had a young Sean Connery in it…

I was young kid but the banshee scene in that movie scared me for years!
I really enjoyed Darby O’Gill and the Little People/.
I don’t remember the banshee, but perhaps I was older.

There is a place for horror in literature/film, IMO, but I can’t take it if it ends badly. I like it if it shows that our Lord is stronger than Satan. A movie I really like is Bless the Child, it has angels as well as evil and the angels are calm, helpful and Johnny-on-the-spot. The icky stuff is overshadowed by the good parts.
