Is anyone here a member of the American Legion?

I know veterans who are not members, and I was wondering if the AL would be fitting for a Catholic.

I don’t know much about them, but as long as they aren’t a secret society or are affiliated with the Masons there shouldn’t be a problem.

According to one source, they do what they can to support the Constitution. They also are or were capable of suppressing what they call subvertive groups. Subvertive here means subvertive to the United States.

So, their actions could have a tendency to be clandestine.

Not a member, but I had a lot of veterans in my family, and AFAIK there is absolutely nothing wrong with the American Legion.

They haven’t done anything to try to suppress Catholicism.
They gave Cardinal Spellman an award.

And you can buy a Douay-Rheims Bible with their emblem right on the front.

They’re just a regular old patriotic American institution. Join away.

Woah I didn’t know they had a bible like that. I know a friend who would love this for Christmas.

THANK YOU!

And OP, many countries have legions - they are admirable, good societies, devoted to veteran’s affairs and aid and supporting our armed forces. They have chaplains of all creeds, however in the Commonwealth realms the main chaplain is usually an Anglican or Catholic depending on the appointment. I think they follow a pattern now.

I spent alot of time at the AM growing up, my dad was a member.
I can’t imagine any conflict, beyond some guys drinking too much in the bar.

I am a member of the American Legion, and of course we support the constitution just like every other US citizen.

The claims of clandestine operations are pure rubbish. I’d like to see that source.

I think the Legionnaires had a rumble with the Wobblies once back in the dark ages of WWI.

I’m not going to lay awake worrying about it now.

I’m not a member, but I see no reason why a Catholic couldn’t join the American Legion. Are there some rumors/conspiracy theories floating around or something?

I am a vet and was a member for several years, mostly because my late father was in the leadership of the post I belonged to. I’m not a big organization joiner and I was never really interested in their activities, but they are a great organization. I saw nothing that I felt was even remotely contradictory to Catholic beliefs.
