American Nuns’ Group Voter’s Guide Favours Abortion, Homosexuality

WASHINGTON, November 3, 2006 (LifeSiteNews.com) – The National Coalition of American Nuns (NCAN), has issued a U.S. voters’ guide promoting acceptance of homosexuality, abortion, “gay marriage”, and adoption of children by homosexual partners. The organization is also a strong proponent of women’s ordination and numerous leftist causes.

NCAN, which in various reports is said to represent anywhere from 500 to 1200 U.S. nuns, was founded in 1969 by prominent dissident Sister Margaret Traxler of the congregation of Notre Dame. Sr. Jeannine Gramick, another Notre Dame nun, and co-founder of the gay friendly New Ways Ministry, is currently a member of the NCAN Executive Committee.

In “An Open Letter to Catholic Voters,” dated October 22, the organization, which is not officially recognized by the Church, urged Catholics to “vote their own consciences in the November elections.”

These “nuns” have already excommunicated themselves by their actions. Like the article said, the membership is difficult to determine, so pronouncing excommunications would also be difficult to do. In the case of Archbishop Lefebvre, who some people on these forums seem to have nothing but endless sympathy for him. The pope personally told him not to consecrate those bishops and he did it anyway. I wish that the Church would be more vocal with excommunicating dissenters like these nuns, but it’s not like it’s some conspiracy to excommunicate someone because they want to say the TLM. Archbishop Lefebvre was excommunicated for disobeying the pope, not for wanting to say the TLM.

Fair enough! I’d settle for some American Bishop saying that these nuns have all automatically excommunicated themselves. But I won’t hold my breath.

Yes, Lefebvre did disobey the Pope. However, if you were ever to read the full account of what transpired between the Vatican and the Archbishop (it is all documented very precisely) , you would see that the Vatican was extremely uncharitable to the Archbishop, toying with him, agreeing to the episcopal consecration, and then repeatedly postponing them over several months. It appears they were “waiting him out”, perhaps hoping cancer would take him before he could provide for the continuation of the order. It was a shameful affair and I believe both the Pope and Cardinal Ratzinger regreted it. And both were/are interested in healing it. And so is the Society, in my humble lay opinion.

This might seem like nit-picking, but to avoid any confusion I will mention that Traxler was, and Gramick is, a member of the School Sisters of Notre Dame.

As always, I will vote my conscience…and my conscientious vote it will be against gay marriage, abortion, and adoption by homosexual couples, because none of these are good for society.
