I think its more relative to the cloth from which your cut than nationality or anything else for that matter.
I’ve gotten through quite a few engine overhauls and vehicle restorations and repairs without uttering a single profanity, vulgarity or missuse of the name Jesus Christ … assuming, of course, praying to the Almighty that the new transmissions splines will marry up to the clutch properly is fair game and likewise for the driveshaft length where modifications are in play.
Sure its possible, not everyone curses.
I’ll admit, I’m dense. OK? I admitted it. But I do not understand why this is a big deal.
You don’t understand why swearing in the media is a big deal or people using swear words in their daily vocabulary?

Sadly, it is indeed a widespread part of the culture. I hear it frequently, unfortunately. I even hear it from otherwise devout Christians, and I really believe that there is a very big disconnect there. I think it has become so ingrained in some areas that people don’t really think about what it is they are saying.
This is a bit off topic, but I love Farscape, I only know one other person who has seen it so I just had to say something, after I saw you signature. Crichton is awesome, Aeryn is awesome, Dargo is awesome even ol scorpious is awesome. Sorry just had to say something,

Now on the topic of blasphemy as swearing it is very common. I use to say it alot, but now that I’m becoming a christian I don’t say it anymore. Everyone else I know uses it often. Somebody told me you could make up for it by saying Blessed be his name which Is what I try to do. Using God’s name in vain and saying Jesus Christ as a swear are unfortunately common.

Mostly, I don’t know why “taking the Lord’s name in vain” has come to mean using certain phrases with an exclamation.

Historically, it’s not at all clear to me that this refers to uttering a phrase such as “God [blank] it!” Do we see something like that being condemned in the Bible? I could be wrong, but I don’t think we do. I’m not saying that everything must be Biblical, but in this case, we’re talking about a commandment… it must have been made for a reason, I.E., people were actually doing something that this commandment taught against.

I take it that the “something” in question is likely taking an oath to God, and not following through - the equivalent of “I swear to God, I will [blank]” and then not doing it.

I don’t say “God [blank] it!” myself, but I do invoke God in moments of frustration, saying things like, “Lord, almighty!” or “God have mercy!” Is that sinful? I bet most would say no, and yet it seems awfully similar to “God [blank] it!” as far as I’m concerned. What do you think?

Its disrespectful to use God’s name for no good reason. Yes saying “Oh my God” is wrong. Its using God’s name lightly.

Saying “God Damn” is cursing. Its commanding God to damn something to hell. Sure I don’t think most people who get mad and say God damn are actually asking God to damn something to hell. However God and Hell are not words to be used lightly without consequence. You should invoke God’s name only when you mean to talk to him. Its simply disrespectful.

These offenses go against taking the Lord’s name in vain.

I believe saying what the hell and other such things are also wrong. Sure it isn’t using God’s name without reason. However its making light of a very serious thing which is Hell. Same goes for the use of the F word. Its taking light of an action that is very sacred.

Just using my own reasoning on this.

Thanks for your response. I think I’ll start a thread on this when I’ve gathered my thoughts further.
