Amnesty International is set to defy the Vatican and risk the wrath of Catholics around the world over its decision to back abortion for rape victims.

“If, in fact, Amnesty International persists in this course of action, individuals and Catholic organisations must withdraw their support because, in deciding to promote abortion rights, Amnesty International has betrayed its mission,” said Cardinal Renato Martino, president of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace.

The Vatican is accusing Amnesty of double standards, because it opposes the death penalty in all circumstances but, it argues, under some circumstances will now condone the killing of an unborn child.

Hopefully Amnesty isn’t going to turn into another UNICEF–that is, a secular progressive organization that cares more about abortion and contraception than saving lives. lately I have become very wary of all charities that are not directly affiliated with the church, since one can’t be sure exactly what they are doing.

I’ve never thought of Amnesty as a charity. I thought they were an anti-American organization.

When are people going to realize that in matters of rape the rapist and only the rapist is the bad guy? The baby isn’t the bad guy, he certainly didn’t chose to be concieved in such a violent manner! And I firmly believe that aborting the child that was a result of rape is only going to make a traumatic experince that much more difficult for the victim.

I was in a debate over this topic on another board. I pointed out that no matter who rapes me I’m still the mother of that baby. If I destroyed that baby by abortion I would also be destroying myself. Killing your own child does not solve anything.

I didn’t imply they were but I always thought their primary purpose was to be against Americans.
Nope. They have never been “anti-American,” in my opinion. I have sponsored AI for years, and I am so terribly disappointed in their decision on this issue.

I haven’t really followed them lately (except on their recent descent into lunacy by holding abortion to be a human right), but they were one of the first to speak out against Castro’s abuses when everyone else was calling Cuba a socialist paradise.
