This article turns to the old saying, reason has a wax nose, which intends to say that mens’ reason is malleable and can be pointed in any direction. When it comes to Scripture, too, if one is clever enough, it can be pointed in any direction. The New Testament in fact warns that some men twist Scripture to their own destruction (2 Pet 3:16). Catholics believe that when Christ prophesied that the Holy Spirit will teach you every thing (Jn 14:26), that he intended the gift of the Holy Spirit to the Church to help interpret Scripture authentically. Saint Peter said in Scripture that “we have the prophetic word made sure. You would do well to pay attention to this as to a shining lamp” (2 Pet 1:19). This is a remedy for the wax noses of men, either our own or someone’s else’s whose decision we have decided to follow… Otherwise our salvation would be founded on wax noses.
