A close friend of mine became a Catholic under unusual circumstances. God’s Providence arranges things in our life that we don’t always understand. I have worked for a local McDonald’s for 27 years. I have always worked the night shift. When my two oldest boys were babies , an event shaped my life and began a conversion of a close friend.
The two of us worked together on the night shift. We soon became friends and talked on every subject under the sun. His father passed away one evening. It was a diffucult time for him. He started to do a lot of thinking and began searching. I continued to talk to him about the Catholic faith but didn’t seem to be getting anywhere. He shocked me when he came in and told he was going to try and return to the religion of his family tree. He was going to become a Huguenot. I almost gave up when some events took place that brought about his conversion.
One night near Halloween, we were both waiting to clock in. It was 3 minutes to close and the Feast of Christ the King. Two men came in the store with ski masks. They were doing a weird dance when one yelled this is a robbery. I immediately stepped into the walk in refrigerator. I could hear yelling. Money was being thrown all over the place. Then I heard a gunshot. There were so many emotions going throuh my mind. My two young children at home may not have a father. I prayed for the crew. It wasn’t long before this that at a local Burger King, all the crew were found dead in their freezer. I prayed and prayed. I truly believe that Christ the King spared our lives that night. It took a long time to trust anyone again. Most of the crew quit. The final step of his conversion was about to take place. My friend started to go to college while working to become a teacher. His professor asked him one day if he could do research on his ancestor from the Civil War. He became good at researching. After attending a family reunion, I asked him to help me research my great grandfather. We were able to locate the ship he came on called the Russia on microfilm. The village he listed was close to the City of Prague. I came into work one day and asked him if he ever heard of the Infant Jesus of Prague. He said no. I handed him a pamphlet on the Infant. The next night he came to work white as a ghost. I asked him what was wrong? He told me he read the pamphlet. As he was lying there in bed, he suddenly saw the Infant Jesus of Prague standing by his bed. Behind him was a figure with a staff in his hand. He did not know who that was. Later visiting a church with some friends he saw a statue exactly like the figure in his room. The statue was the figure of St. Joseph. In the United States you ususally see St. Joseph holding the Child Jesus. In Europe it is more common to see a statue with St. Joseph holding a staff. This was the final piece of the puzzle. He came to work one day and shocked me. He wanted to become a Catholic. He later made a trip to Prague to thank the Infant for the grace he received. We have been friends for many years. Never give up on anyone you are praying for. God’s Providence arranges things in a way that is best.
