I was recently watching a video on youtube with the same title. About 7:24 into the video Fr. Josiah Trenham (Orthodox Priest) makes the following comment: " ‘…The One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic’ is found in the Orthodox Church.’ " My question is how can this be since St. Ignatius first used the word catholic in his letters to the Smyrneans. “…wherever Jesus Christ is, there is the Catholic Church.” and if this is a repeat then I’m sorry. Thanks.

Of all the disputes between Catholics and Orthodox, the Catholic appeal to name is the weakest, if and basically has no ground to stand upon. The Orthodox claim to be THE catholic church. As in what they are, not just their name brand. They refer to themselves as such when talking ecclesiology.

When the Fathers wrote about being the catholic and orthodox Church, they weren’t talking about two branches, they meant in their church was to be found catholicity and orthodoxy. Same deal here.

Saint Ignatius is their saint, too.

Sorry if I was a bit terse. Are you familiar with the shared history of Catholics and Orthodox?

No worries…

somewhat…
Imagine us as one family who have the same great, great, great, great grandfather Steve, and the family was close for generations, and great grandpa Jim and great grandpa Bob got in a big argument, and Jim’s side of the family and Bob’s side of the family after that, and in future generations, aren’t talking to each other, even though they’re all descended from the same people, carry on pretty much the same traditions, and all have the same family name, and both sides claiming they’re the ones who best carry on the traditions of their great, great, great, great grandpa Steve, and that the other side does not.

I hope that wasn’t too patronizing. I got kind of into it. And hope it makes sense.

oh no not all 😄 That was a very good description.

My question about your despcription is Jesus himself said that “a house divided against itself cannot stand.” Yes we are from the same family but we’re divided. I don’t know…thats what came to my mind.

Indeed. And we’ve seen further great divisions over the last millennium despite Jesus’ prayers that we may be one. May we all continue to pray and strive for unity.

Amen to that
