My family is “cafeteria” Catholics and I (youngest child) am a devout Catholic. I really don’t how I became devout in 6th grade but I did. Now the struggle but with different generations. Any advice?

Maybe you should consider religious life?? I am serious… 6th grade and you’re devout… I heard there’s a decrease in religious because families are getting smaller but there are a great number of people who feel a calling from early on.

Well what I meant by devout was more relative. By 6th grade I had simply come to accept the Magisterium as opposed to most Americans I guess picking and choosing which beliefs to uphold. It’s not like I go to daily Mass or pray 1-2 hours a day although eventually I hope to do this. I guess the situation is hard due to the power differential and having to choose between God and family on some levels.

Pray, pray, pray.
I am a convert, but this is the situation in my husband’s family (he is the only remaining practicing Catholic). Many of my friends who are my age (20s) have parents who are non-practicing or “cafeteria” Catholics. Of course, we have a lot of people around us our own age who don’t practice anything. But it is definitely hard without family support, especially when that family made an effort (or appeared to make an effort) to raise their children in the faith. It can feel like the rug’s been swept out from underneath you.
The important thing to remember is that the anchor is not your mom or dad, or your friend, but Jesus and the Church. Our personal relationships are important, but part of what I feel makes Catholics different is that we don’t (or shouldn’t) make our religious practice dependent on the actions of individual people - whether that’s a charismatic preacher, or a relative, or fun youth group. Those things are GREAT to have and they foster community, but that’s not the essential part of what enriches us as Catholics.

Sounds to me like you were blessed with a very beautiful gift of faith. How wonderful for you.
As for advice, I really think you need to learn to lead by example. No arguing, just practice the lifestyle and let them see you in action so to speak
I come from a devout family and a very practicing mom. I am grateful for the example she set, but even when you come from a strong Catholic background, there could still be friction. My mom has her limits and I feel I am called to a much more personal relationship with God. My mom just doesn’t get it.
