Washington, DC – Read any commentary on the contentious abortion debate and you’ll likely find a wide variety of numbers attempting to estimate the number of abortions that have taken place since the Supreme Court’s infamous Roe v. Wade abortion decision since 1973.

Dear Friend,

Today, in Washington, DC, tens of thousands of Americans will march in support of pro-life issues on the anniversary of the Supreme Court’s Roe v. Wade decision. The annual March for Life celebration brings together people from Louisiana and across the country to bring awareness to Capitol Hill that the struggle to protect life during all stages is important and not forgotten.

As you know, President Obama and liberal politicians in Congress are attempting to reverse decades of pro-life advances in their so-called health care reform bill. If that bill is successful, federal funds would be used to pay for abortions for the first time in more than 30 years in violation of the long standing policy known as the Hyde amendment. It’s outrageous that liberal politicians believe the destruction of human life is in any way connected to health care.

But, sadly, this is not their first effort to reverse our pro-life gains. Last year President Obama reversed a presidential executive order against federal funding of embryonic stem-cell research. Frankly, I find this to be outrageous. Embryonic babies – the tiniest, most innocent human beings – are killed in the process of extracting embryonic stem cells, and taxpayers should never be forced to support this sort of medical research that takes human life.

These radical assaults against the culture of life that we’ve worked so hard to foster show how critical it is that we continue to remain active and vigilant in our fight to promote life. And, today, I join with the thousands marching on Capitol Hill in renewing our commitment to the fight to protect all human life.

Sincerely,

David Vitter
U.S. Senator
