I go to a small parish (~90 families). Well, we only have a few families with students in CCD. So, apparently two of the families decided that they were taking their kids out of CCD, and announced it tonight at the start of class (the two moms came without the kids). The reason they provided was that the CCD program at our parish wasn’t trendy or hip, and are planning to shop around. Well, that takes four of the six kids we had in CCD out, leaving only two; my daughter (4th grade) and an 8th grader.

So, don’t really know what to think or make of it. Anyone go through something similar? Any advice?

Get the office to supply you with the materials to teach them at home, and let the pastor know you are doing so.
He can make notations so that when the time comes for Sacraments, they will be ready. Also, he should inform the Diocese.
You can do this. You can also enroll them in another nearby parish Faith Formation program. They will understand and help you.

I’m sure we’ll hear more on what’s going on. Honestly, I’m more torqued off over how everything went down. Seriously, who decides to be so dramatic as to do something like this in front of the other students? Why’d you even enroll your kids anyway-this was only week 3? It’s not like they haven’t been in the program for six plus years. And since when did learning about God have to be hip and trendy?

IS that what they said? Hip and trendy? Or did you hear this.

Wife was there and that’s how she described it. DRE was in tears after they left.

Does your parish have a membership to FORMED.ORG?
Lots of good catechesis there, good for the entire family Which, really, is how it’s supposed to be done in the first place. The CHurch is supposed to HELP you teach your kids the faith, but you are the primary catechists.

ETA: If they are truly like they sound, give thanks that they are gone and not influencing your kids. Likely they will become some other DRE’s problem in the near future.
