"On April 1, 1987, the most popular artists, actors, fashion designers, writers and musicians in America converged on St Patrick’s Cathedral in New York. Liza Minnelli showed up, along with Calvin Klein, Tom Wolfe and George Plimpton. Yoko Ono arrived a bit early; she was giving a speech.

One could have easily mistaken Andy Warhol’s memorial service for a society event rather than a religious one, were it not for the eulogy given by the artist’s friend John Richardson. He spoke of Warhol’s “secret piety”, which “inevitably changes our perception of an artist who fooled the world into believing his only obsessions were money, fame and glamour, and that he was cool to the point of callousness. Never take Andy at face value.”

It is this secret piety that the Vatican Museums hope to uncover in their major exhibition of his work next year. Indeed, the Catholic faith is the only constant theme in his strange life."

And, from what I have read, he struggled with SSA and lived chastely. An amazing man.

Cool!

I wonder how many other hidden gems there are in various industries dominated by “secular” ideals…

Yes, I have read that too. My favorite photo of him is one where he is shaking hands with Pope John Paul II. He shortened his last name from Warhola.

Great… but this is tragically missing the point of the whole idea.

He wasn’t that devout. He made several pornographic films and he exploited everyone he worked with and glorified drug addicts and trannies in his films

Edie was kinda a man eater but that other stuff has come with the territory forever.

Edie was exploited by Warhol and Warhol should’ve known better. Edie was high and was abused by many men.

Yeah and this is why i dont like the concept of like factory art… but often times it is the artist who is exploited.

A lot of it is a sad life in general.

Except his body of work was pornographic and it glorified drug use

My most successful and tragic relationship was with a woman who was like Edie reincarnated. Problem is I didn’t want to be Andy or Bowie… I wanted to be Michaelangelo or William Blake. It was like the most difficult part of my life.

Edit: we could have nearly destroyed the world.

yikes…so they weren’t just about soup cans after all…

Andy was no saint, but he did volunteer a lot at the Catholic soup kitchen in his later years, and very quietly. I suspect the deaths of many in his circle as well as his own near-death in a murder attempt left an impression on him. I always liked his memorial service card. I believe his service was at St. Patricks. (Please Note: This uploaded content is no longer available.)

Warhol said, “What’s pornography anyway? … The muscle magazines are called pornography, but they’re really not. They teach you how to have good bodies[11] … I think movies should appeal to prurient interests. I mean the way things are going now – people are alienated from one another. Blue Movie was real. But it wasn’t done as pornography—it was done as an exercise, an experiment. But I really do think movies should arouse you, should get you excited about people, should be prurient. Prurience is part of the machine. It keeps you happy. It keeps you running.” -Warhol; The Biography, Bockris

I didn’t realize he made this film. I always sort of admired Warhol. After reading this quote on his film, my thoughts are that he was obsessed with contradiction and had little to no common sense. Perhaps he did thoroughly convert in the end, but who are we to judge another’s soul.
