Hello,

Could someone please explain to me what the difference is between the Anglican Church, Episcopal Church, Church of England, etc?

I’m trying to chart a “family tree” to see how the Church of England has expanded or branched out, but I’m unclear what all belongs to the Church of England and how a family tree would look.

Any information is appreciated!

It will be a long project. The Church of England is the mother church, point of origin, for all Anglicanism. When there was only the CoE, that was synonomous with “Anglican”.

The colonial aspects of the Church of England, in the colonies and dominions of the Empire, eventually became independent Anglican Churches, self governing. Thirty-eight such Churches form the official Anglican Communion; that is, they are in communion with the Archbishop of Canterbury. Most of them will have the name Anglican in their titles, but not all do. The official representative Church of the official Anglican Communion in this country is the Episcopal Church, but most such Churches will be called the Anglican Church of Canada, of South Africa, of Australia, etc. So just getting all those down is going to be task. And this doesn’t take into consideration all the Anglican groups that have split off from official Anglicanism, in an attempt to retain a modicum, at least, of orthodoxy. Lots and lots of those.

You have a job ahead of you.

Thing to keep in mind: all of the Church of England is Anglican, but not all Anglicans are in the Church of England. Not anymore.

big project indeed, as of now there are 168 Anglican denominations included in the approximately 40,000 christian denominations Whew !!!

i did a comparison of several denominations myself sometime back, after looking at the commonalities of the vast majority i converted to Catholicism.

168 – one for each country they are in, same as Catholics have 242, one for each country.

Here is a timeline I found… justus.anglican.org/resources/timeline/ it might be helpful. I’ve been considering joining the Anglican Church here so have been looking at it lately. You prob have more info then I do at this point though.
