It’s being taught by a college professor and diocesan theologian…I believe she has doctorates and masters in quite a few fields, ranging from British History with a focus on Tudor History, to Anglican history…

Along with the spirit of this thread, it would be interesting to know what everyone’s definition of “catholic” (small c) is?

I think that spelling Catholic with a small c is a barbarous and heretical subterfuge, so I have no definition:D

I define “Catholic” as “possessing the fullness of the Faith.” And at times I incline to Archbishop Temple’s view that the Catholic Church does not at present exist.

Awaiting a spate of “then you think Jesus lied” posts from the RCs,

Well I’m not going to say that Jesus lied LOL…but I think the whole question of Matthew 16 really does drive me nuts personally. What did Jesus mean when He said the gates of hell would not prevail against it (the Church)?" Catholics interpret it as meaning that error cannot spring forth from the mouth of the pope ever and the pope is the safeguard, the sentry, for truth and moral certitude. Orthodox seem to see it more as an ‘over time’ sort of thing. The lies of the devil and error cannot prevail over the Church over time after a conciliar Church has squashed it. As for Protestants, couldn’t tell you what they think of that passage.

I’m still trying to make sense of it all myself. My only concern with what you’re saying is really basically that NOBODY is right and possessing the fullness of the faith. The Catholics see the papacy as ensuring fullness, the Orthodox councils and bishops and keeping true to the faith in synods, etc. as keeping the fullness alive, and so what other option is there? If neither Orthodoxy or Catholicism possess this fullness, then have the Gates of Hell prevailed and what did Jesus mean? His words sound like a triumph, not a vision of chaos and a degrading, declining, broken, pathetic couple of churches who are both wrong.

If you’re right, then how sad this would be!? No Church possesses the fullness of the faith, only pieces of it or a veneer of it laden with toxic doctrines and human-centered arrogance? It’s the ultimate dark view and I pray you’re wrong!

I tried, about 15 years ago. But she lives on Norfolk Island and I figured it was a lost cause.

OTOH, to not disappoint you, did I ever mention that I once met Anne Perry?

And of course, you know I met Katherine Kurtz. You do still have the book, yes?

hi sam. yes i do. near balad. love the people here. im going to have to learn the language. i feel safer on a combat patrol than i do in some U.S. cities ive been to. most of the people here are big hearted. i took some snack packs with me on one patrol hoping to give the kids something to eat. forgot it was ramadan. thankfully someone reminded me. be we were told that if they asked for water, we could give them that. so we were able to do some good. there are some cultural aspects here that i find very appealing. such as the relationship between the seller and the buyer. you just dont buy something and leave. the seller usually wants you to hang around, have some chi, or food, and get to know you better. i will never look at the United States the same way again. or the Arab people for that matter. the media only tells very little of their story. and falsely portrays them much of the time. i have found them to be a family oriented society, that given the right tools, could have much to contribute to the world. Peace and Grace to you. 🙂
