On May 15, 2009, the Anglo-Lutheran Catholic Church officially filed a formal petition to enter the Roman Catholic Church “as a unified body” in whichever form the Pope and the Curia decides is the most appropriate. The ALCC’s petition was filed with the Council for Promoting Christian Unity, and is now before the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith.

I have never heard of this group and was doing some reading on different Lutheran groups when I saw this. thought it maybe a interesting topic.

Irl Gladfelter, who is a Metropolitan Archbishop with the ALCC, is a periodic poster here at CAF. Perhaps he will respond.

Hi Jon,
I was hoping to hear from you on this. You were the first person I thought of when I read this. Of course I had ahd heard of the TAC that have petitioned Rome, But I had never heard of any lutherans making this request. course outside of the LCMS,WELS, and ELCA I did not know of any other Lutherns in America.

It’s a small group, but I think over time there will be more coming from various directions, not only to the Latin Catholic but also to the Orthodox church.

It makes perfect sense, but the sad thing is that usually the individuals with the epiphany, the ones who really get it, separate themselves from the main body of the larger denomination at an early stage and have little to no influence on the rest.

What is needed is individuals at the top, at the most influential level of church life in their denomination, to guide the rest in a truly pastoral manner toward Apostolic Christianity. One or two small congregations breaking off now and then just leave the rest of their denomination or circuit or assembly less catholic and Apostolic in outlook than before.

Ho Scott,
There are some other small synods as well. The ALCC is unusual due to its decision to seek communion with Rome, as sign on to the Catholic Catechism. I found a couple of other sites that discuss the ALCC, though I can’t vouch for their accuracy. I’ll leave that to Archbishop Gladfelter, should he wish to comment here.

I agree, and you can see with both the ALCC and the TAC/ACA.
My memory might be faulty, but I think this was one of the reasons what JPII seemed to put more emphasis on corporate reconciliation than on individual conversion.

There are a bunch of small odd synods of Lutherans.

ELCA, Missouri Synod, Wisconsin Synod are the big three.

valpo.edu/lutheran/LutheranChurchBodies.html lists a bunch for North America; most of them are in the US.

Most of the others are splinters from the above or from one of the organizations that merged to create the big three.
