On the anniversary dates of the death of loved ones, my elderly relative liked to place a message to them and a verse from a poem in the In Memorium section of the newspaper. I guess she thought they would get the message and it was also a way of reminding friends and relatives who happened to read it to pray for them. Is this a part of Catholic tradition along with prayers and masses for the repose of their souls?

Sounds like a cultural tradition; not part of the faith, but not contrary either.

Used to see this a lot back in the day. Not so much now that newspapers are a shadow of their former selves because of the Internet. Yeah, the deceased aren’t going to read it, but it’s nice for families to keep the memories alive. Never heard any Church opinion on this at all.
