Hi,
Here is a short & true story. If anyone can offer insight into living Mt. 25, please do!
A few years ago I decided to give a little money to a Catholic charity (no longer sure which it was but it was probably Catholic Relief Services). So I did, and I noticed over the following weeks that I began to get more and more charitable solicitations in the mail, and not just from Catholic Relief Services.
Mindful of Mt. 25 and trying to give to Christ in my brothers and sisters, I gave a little money to each of organizations asking me for money (except for the ones I could determine to be fraudulent). At this point I noticed the curiosity that one organization supported distributing contraception.
Weeks and months went by and unfortunately the trickle of charitable solicitations began a flood. Many organizations asked me for money; many of them were Catholic, some of them had questionable credentials, and some of them had no affiliation with the Church.
I became frustrated and tried to stop the flood by contacting these charitable solicitors. At one point I asked someone on the phone, “how did this happen?” The person explained that “these charities are always selling your information to each other, so your contact information will just keep circulating.”
Because the flood of mail is so great I gave up trying to stop it. And this is the final point of my story: I began to get mail from Planned Parenthood. What irony! According to my figuring, somehow my contact information trickled from Catholic services and eventually all the way to Planned Parenthood.
(Of course, now that I write this, it occurred to me that Planned Parenthood somehow got my contact info some other way. But before now it seemed obvious to me that my contact info started at Catholic Relief Services and found its way to Planned Parenthood).
So that is my annoyance. I stopped giving money to these mail people a long time ago, but the unstoppable flood of mail continues.
