So first he blessed the rings then he offered a blessing to the couple and the bride’s 6 year old daughter, saying they were now a family, with their family, friends and their Church supporting them. Nobody would have ever thought that there was anything wrong with the choice they had made to marry civilly, in a ceremony which replaced any mention of “man”, “woman”, “husband” and “wife” with “person”, “people” and “spouse”.

This might even cause the couple themselves to wonder why a wedding in the Church is even necessary. It saddens me that a priest would cancel Mass on a Holy Day of Obligation to go to City Hall. Was he actually originally intending to have the wedding in place of the Vigil Mass?

No. Originally, the wedding was to take place at 2 p.m. and the Mass of Mary, Mother of God at 7 p.m. That got changed when the civil ceremony was scheduled for 6 p.m.

The wedding took place at the K of C hall, not City Hall, which wouldn’t be open at that time on New Year’s Eve.

Personally I would contact the Bishop - the Bishop has a right to know what is brewing because I know if my soon to be ex just pulled that and had a Catholic priest involved I would be very quick to file every complaint with every Church authority I could find. Not out of anger but because if I am respecting the Sacrament and my vows then the priests who much has been given darned well better until a Tribunal says otherwise. (now where is the boxer smiling face)
