Another Christmas Thread (Calling All Crafty People)

I am a first time Aunt this year to a beautiful baby girl šŸ˜ƒ šŸ˜ƒ

I could use some crafty ideas for Christmas for baby and her parents (something for Grandma and Grandpa would be welcome, also.) Iā€™m trying to think up some crafty ways to use photoā€™s that I have, but am open to any suggestions. Want to avoid the kind of thing that they will get a million of and that will end up being a gift card to a Mart Store.

You have pictures, make mini scrap books - go to Michaelā€™s, JoAnnes or one of those stores and look for the little books and then get crafty - usually one picture a page on the smaller books and donā€™t forget to Journal!

You could also look into doing plates or cups or calendars with your pictures. Check out snapfish.com or photobucket.com, they can even help you with this idea.

I had a friend who moved away quite some time ago and she used to scan family pictures (this was before digital became common) or she would get her pictures on a disc and she would use her computer to create calendars of her little family (two children, her husband and herself) and gave them to grandparents and aunts and uncles.
 
This doesnā€™t have anything to do with pictures, but my in-laws loved them. We made tie quilts with two pieces of flannel and doubled the batting. We tied them off and for each tie we said a prayer for them. In the end it was a blanket of prayers. They really donā€™t take that long to make.

That sounds like fun! OP was asking for craft ideas and threw in the fact that she has a lot of pictures to work with soā€¦

i cleaned the rectory for a priest who had a tie quilt given to him by the parishioners heā€™d left. it had squares of photos-- the images were printed on fabric!

it was great. when he showed me all the photos and the people, he got all choked up, especially talking about old friends whoā€™d died before he left the parish.

if you do a basic small quilt in the babyā€™s room colors, they might even like to hjang it on the wall.
 
sorry to poo poo any ideas, but I would recommend not doing something that comes with the assumption of being hung on the walls. As mom to a new little one, I have to say that we received so much of that stuff and even though we donā€™t feel great about it, didnā€™t keep it all because we just didnā€™t have the spaceā€¦

may not be true for them, but I thought Iā€™s share.

A lot of these suggestions are great though! Iā€™ll be checking this thread again for some ideas of my own.
 
I donā€™t know what to do with lots of phots except make a book, but I have another idea for a little girl.

If you make her a nice dress or fancy up a purchased dress with hand sewn lace or appliques like her initials or something, you can buy (or make) her a doll that will fit the dress when she has out grown it.

My mother and I made dolls for both of my younger sisters that wore their own dresses. I think that old pattern had everything from baby to 6x sizes in one. Even if someone were not a big sewer it was easy to sew and stuff the doll and then put on a face with fabric paints. The hair was yarn that the pattern showed us how to sew on. They still have those dolls even decades later.
 
Hereā€™s something a little different.

Scan a montage of favorite photos (or choose just one or two special ones) and have it printed on iron-on transfer paper (a copy place should be able to do this) and transfer it onto a 12x12 piece of white fabric, and use it to make a throw pillow! We did this for the in-laws for their anniversary one year. Pillow forms are available at craft shops or at Wal*Mart. Choose a backing fabric in either solids or prints and use the same fabric to border the picture. A matching or contrasting ruffle finishes it. You may even be able to have the transfer put on at one of those screenprinting shops (sometimes ironing it on at home doesnā€™t work as well as their professional presses.)

You can vary the size of the pillow (see what size forms are available, or just use pillow stuffing!) depending on the size of the photos and make a collection to scatter around the family room or on a bed.
 
Do you decoupage? Did I even spell that right?

For Valentineā€™s day one year in college I made Nathan a frame that was decoupaged. I used craft tissue paper from the craft store then I put a picture of us inside it.

Iā€™ve also done it with pictures. I made a box for myself once, and I decoupaged pictures to it. I love it.

You can buy every at Michaelā€™s for under $10.00. I bet you could make at least 5 frames.

You need decoupage glue, tissue paper/pictures, and a paintbrush.
 
If the parents are Christian I have a suggestion.
What my mom and I have done for gifts is to give our loved ones a frame with their name found in the Bible. My mom knows a lady who does this. She goes though verses in the Bible looking for your name. Then she puts it on stationary paper in a really nice frame. The verse is in an elegant scroll with your name enlarged, capitalized, and in bold. She does it in such a way that your name slants down the paper. On the side of the verse she puts a little Christian symbol, such as praying hands or a cross. This is something that is glued on there so itā€™s not a print. They look awesome! My mom did this for us last year and Iā€™m giving them as gifts this year to several people I know. You could make one for the little one with their first(given) name and give the parents one with the family name.

Oh, and she uses a variety of frames that can be hung on a wall or sitting on a shelf.
