Hello,

I’ve read a number of previous topics about impure thoughts and similar sins and I understand the characteristics that would make one of these actions a mortal sin versus a venial sin (for an impure thought to become a mortal sin one has to give full consent).

I just wasn’t sure about my specific situation. Sometimes I’ll imagine scenes with kissing or similar actions and it leads to sex. I don’t want it to turn to that but sometimes i dwell on it for a moment before turning away from it. I realize that what I start out thinking is a near occasion of sin but would this be a mortal sin?

Also, I should add in that I had been pretty naive about the seriousness of impure thoughts until recently. Until I checked on this website, I always thought that impure thoughts were usually venial sins unless they were especially perverse.

So adding in this factor, would the situation I previously stated be a mortal sin, especially if I only thought I was giving in to a venial sin?

Thanks for any (name removed by moderator)ut on the matter :]

This is not a grave matter, but you may wish to pray for spiritual guidance by the Holy Spirit to help your mind stay pure. Devotions to Mary in wearing a scapular and/or a miraculous medal serve as physical reminders to stay pure.

Hi Mary,

Yes, for a sin to become a mortal sin, you have to be fully consent. Sometimes when we feel attractive to someone or other occasions, an impure thought comes in mind. When that happens, ignore it and pray to God in the name of Jesus so it can go away.
Jesus is the only one that can help you in anything.

When you get an impure thought and keep thinking about it, it will lead you to a mortal sin. When this happens, confess to God and ask for forgiveness.

The devil will try to find different ways to tempt you, so you can fall to the same sin. He might succeed many times, but never give up,be strong, and ask God to give you strength.

God bless you. I will pray for you.

Thank you for the advice and prayers. :] I’m hoping that this near-Mortal sin scare will help me stay away form these thoughts. Thanks again!

If you know that these thoughts lead to impure thoughts then I would avoid them. Why tempt yourself?

Jesus said ““You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.” - Matthew 5:27-28

A very holy priest once told me that bad thoughts are not a sin and that they are part of continuing the human race but he also said as long as you do not commit any sinful acts.
