Thanks for the stunning display of charity “Dr”. Perhaps you could use a lesson in chronology. The post where I say I consider myself a “thinking Catholic” came AFTER (that is, in the sequence of time, as an effect is to its cause) I had been called a “Cafeteria Catholic”, weak, and that my beliefs are offensive. The term “Cafeteria Catholic” is meant as a slur and is never used with a positive connotation (though strangely it implies that that person has actually used their God given intellect to evaluate all the claims of the church). I simply turned the phrase (in Chestertonian fashion) on its head and showed how it can be a compliment, much like how being called a “Terrorist” can be a compliment depending on where ones political allegiances lie.

And my discussion of my previous faith-life has nothing to do with bragging but was meant to counter the claim that I was not “well versed in the faith”. I am not particularly proud my previous faith-life in any fashion given I now believe that it was only so much brain-washing and socialization (in the sociological sense of the word). It was also meant to head off the complaint in the previous thread from which this thread springs: “A person may have received the Sacraments, but not understand what it means to be Catholic. They do not understand why the Church has the authority it has- they may think it’s just an outdated institution that still thinks we’re in the dark ages.” forums.catholic-questions.org/showthread.php?t=78919

Not too mention it was intended to head off the previous style of advice from well meaning people who were not familiar with my situation:

-Better yet go get your hands dirty at a soup kithcen or become a big brother or something else that will get your mind off of you. The Christian life is to be lived outward not inward.

-You’re too self-absorbed. Get out and help other people, and pray, pray, not only for yourself, but for others, and especially for the unflrtunate “liberal” seminarians.

-Apart from a life of prayer, scholarship— whether deep or shallow— can lead to a life of aridity, apathy and even a rejection of Christ’s invitation.

-you have been using your head exclusively, now go out and use your hands and your heart. Think Peace Corps, Mission work, Habitat for Humanity stuff. Take a rosary and a prayerbook and the Life of St Francis and get to work.

-I suggest that you might, as an act of the will, force yourself to engage more in Mass attendance, frequent confession, and further your efforts to engage in daily devotional prayer in the presence of the Lord in the form of perpetual adoration, forums.catholic-questions.org/showthread.php?t=2132&page=2&pp=100

As to the scripture quote about being lukewarm…don’t care. I don’t believe in the inerrancy of scripture and there is no evidence that Jesus ever really said that. To me it sounds like an interpolation of the same nature as those found in the Qu’ran, meant to encourage fundamentalism and blind obedience.

As Scripture tells us, there is a time for everything….it is time to close this thread, as the conversation has departed from any issues and has become a personalized critique of each other.
