The “product” is a human being, and this case is from the UK.

Will we wake up and make these practices illegal? Or is it already too late? Maybe society has lost too much of its understanding of human dignity already.

Can we at least preserve this dignity among us Christians? Many of us seem to be taking our norms from society. Let’s not be “of the world” !
A British surrogate mother says she will raise a disabled girl as her own after the baby’s intended mother said she didn’t want a ‘dribbling cabbage’ as her child. The child, born with Congenital Myotonic Dystrophy, was one of twins the surrogate mother was paid £12,000 in expenses to give birth to.
…Surrogacy and IVF are increasingly not about having a baby to love unconditionally, but having a baby the parents think worthy of love

That is sad. 😦

I don’t think it’s ever too late, though. If the Apostles could convert the Roman Empire, we can convert our society. It will take a lot of work and a lot of grace and many, many saints.

It’s true it’s hard to make things illegal when people want to do them. Yet Thailand is restricting surrogacy in the wake of the scandal of the boy named Gammy that was discussed in another thread.

It seems we could at least spell out some rights of the child in these cases. And some kind of regulation or restriction should be possible.

These kinds of things are very dehumanizing. If we can outlaw discrimination against homosexuals, something can also be done for limiting, or outlawing, this kind of generation of new humans.

The church’s teaching on this is actually very congruent with human rights. The child has the right to a connection with his biological parents, and the parents are responsible for the child and cannot simply kill him/her.
