Could anybody help me with this?: carm.org/mass-and-sacrifice-christ

Thanks!! 🙂
My advice: stay away from CARM. I went there and tried to correct a misconception that they had about the Rosary. The admin was less than kind in responding and just blew off my corrections to the article. Only “their” interpretation is correct according to them. It doesn’t matter what our church actually teaches. Good luck.

What I’ve found is most people (Protestant and Catholic) are “indoctrinated” into their belief without an openness to educating themselves about what other denominations may believe or where they got their beliefs from. Certainly this is the case with many who have been told the Catholic Church has made their beliefs rather than drawn them from the early church. But also the case with what many Catholics have been taught about other faiths as well.

If you are going to their forums to correct them, you should probably stay away. If you are going to gain information and learn about why other traditions believe what they do it might be profitable and serve you down the line when you are able to have a conversation with someone from another tradition. There’s nothing that opens the mind of someone from an opposite point of view like knowing more about their faith than they do!

Run fast and run FAR lol. Carm is not in the business of learning the truth but more in the business of bashing the RCC. They pretty much think every Catholic is going to hell. I have battled back and forth with them for years now and just decided that it is not worth wasting your time with people that do not care to know the truth on any matter. They have an agenda and you are imposing on that agenda by trying to write a wrong. 🤷

As others have said, it is not likely that you will have constructive dialogue with that group.

If however you are concerned about the content of that page and not the group:

They recognize that we say that though the Mass is a sacrifice it is a re-presentation of the original sacrifice and not a separate sacrifice. They then say “but that’s un-possible11!!11!” so it must actually be an attempt to re-sacrifice Christ and hence wrong because Christ’s original sacrifice was sufficient.

Basically, the truth is that the Mass is a sort of timeless moment, wherein the priest makes that exact same sacrifice that happened 2000 years ago present now. Same sacrifice. Present now. This would be impossible for unaided humans, but not for God because God is… God. He can play with time as He likes.

That they think that God can’t or won’t do this is their perogative, but after saying this they are no longer arguing against what the Mass is (or from their perspective, what we believe the Mass to be) but rather arguing against what they believe that we would have to believe about the Mass, if we believed as they did.

And there we agree with them. What they believe we should believe about the Mass if we believed as they did is complete nonsense.

It just so happens that they’re wrong and that we don’t believe what they think we ought to believe, given what they believe about what we believe, and so by arguing against it they’re just wasting everybody’s time.

(And if you followed that last sentence on the first try, congratulations.)

My advise; find truely Catholic groups and stay away from this CARM bunch.

I watched one of their videos when I was studying the Catholic Church prior to converting. The video I watched caused me a lot of doubt about the Catholic Church. HOWEVER, once you actually learn what the CHURCH says for HERSELF, all doubts will disappear. I stumbled on that same video a couple days ago that I had watched back in the day. I’ve continued to study the Church for the last few years, and after watching that video, I was blown away that I let it cause me any hint of doubt. They don’t have a clue what the Church really teaches. They just sound like they do. Seriously, don’t even bother with CARM.

There are many non-Catholics on this forum that bring up the same objections that are posed in the CARM videos. Stick to this forum, see them brought up, and the correct answer will pop up by many of the learned people on this forum. CARM will do nothing more than hamper your growth in the understanding of the teachings of the CC.

My opinion is that you should only visit it once you are much stronger in your faith. In learning how to defend the faith, it is good to know what the common objections against it are by non-Cathoolics and non-Christians. But, you must first know your faith. Take the next few years of just continually studying the Church, the Church Fathers, councils, scripture, then maybe go back to it in a few years. Until then, don’t bother.

As already suggested, I would avoid CARM altogether. I visited it regularly at one time and found it very hard to be charitable because they are, for the most part, bullies. You are wrong, they are right, and they are not gentle in letting you know. It is not worth your time to exchange information with them. They will merely dismiss oyu as brainwashed.

If you really want to read anti-Catholic posts, go to CNN and click on any report about the Pope then scroll down to the comment section. The level of anti-Catholicsm is mind boggling.

I agree with everyone else. Stay away from those who use Catholicism and the Catholic Church as a scapegoat to indoctrinate new members. If you are confronted with this in real life simply explain the Lord’s Prayer:
Code:
The prayer as it occurs in Matthew 6:9–13

Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name.
Your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth, as it is in heaven.
GIVE US THIS DAY OUR DAILY BREAD,
and forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.

The prayer as it occurs in Luke 11:2–4

Father,
hallowed be your name.
Your kingdom come.
.
.
GIVE US EACH DAY OUR DAILY BREAD,
and forgive us our sins
for we ourselves forgive everyone who is indebted to us.
And lead us not into temptation.
I don’t think Christ would have created a prayer simply to say something before eating breakfast, lunch and dinner. This prayer was intended to be said before receiving the Blessed Sacrament. Although there is nothing wrong with saying it before breakfast, lunch and dinner.

I have, and you are absolutely right: mind boggling. I can’t believe or understand the hatred that some people have for the CC. It’s also pretty bad on Yahoo! news articles regarding ANYTHING religious, especially the Pope. But coming from a “Christian group”, you would think that CARM would be a little different…one would think.🤷

From a non-Catholic.
  1. Stay away from that site.
  2. I would contend that when they say: * **We certainly do not want to misrepresent Roman Catholic theology, **but we must ask how it is possible for the Mass to not be a re-sacrifice of Christ when the Mass is called a divine sacrifice (CCC, 1068) that is done over and over again. *
    The follow that by saying:
“We risk the Roman Catholic saying that the biblical response to their position is a response to a straw man. Typically, the Roman Catholic will say that the Mass is not a re-sacrifice. But it is difficult to conclude otherwise when we examine what the official Roman Catholic documents say. Therefore we surmise that if it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck, and looks like a duck, it must be a duck.”
it lets one know that they do, in fact, wish to misrepresent Catholic theology.

I have been boycotting CARM for about 8 years now. They are one of the worst excuses for a forum I’ve ever seen. There is no moderation…unless you’re a Catholic, and then only to prevent you from posting links to authentic Catholic teaching which would prove them specious anti-Catholic propagandists. Don’t waste your time.

As for refuting that page. Get a copy of A Biblical Walk Through the Mass by Dr. Edward Sri.

**A Biblical Walk Through the Mass: Understanding What We Say and Do in the Liturgy**

         by Edward Sri
As Catholics, the Mass is the center of our Faith. We celebrate it every day. We know all the responses. We know all the gestures. But do we know what it all means?
In A Biblical Walk Through the Mass, Dr. Edward Sri takes us on a unique tour of the Liturgy. Based on the revised translation of the Mass, this book explores the biblical roots of the words and gestures we experience in the Liturgy and explains their profound significance. This intriguing look at the Mass is sure to renew your faith and deepen your devotion to the Eucharist.

This book is used as the text for A Biblical Walk Through the Mass Study Program, but it may also be purchased separately at steep bulk discounts. For those not able to attend a study, this is a perfect resource for catechesis on the deep riches of the Mass.
